“Lily…”

“What? You know I want you to find love. I can’t wait until you’re in college.”

“I can,” I tell her. “Besides, Colt and I have nothing in common.” As the words leave my mouth, I know they’re not true. In fact, Colt and I have much more in common than I could ever imagine.

“Anyway, we’re going to be late for class. I’ll see you guys later.”

We wish each other goodbye, and I head to history. Colt is sitting in the back with his friends, and as soon as he sees me, he waves. I wave, too, and sit down in my usual seat in the front.

So far so good. This whole fake relationship is sure to be a piece of cake.

Chapter Seventeen

Colton

“I don’t get it, man,” Owen says to me after I’m done with coding class. He, Vince, Knox, Mario, and our other friends are gathered around our usual table at Mikey’s.

“What?” I ask as I dip a fry in ketchup.

Owen tilts his head from side to side like something baffles him. “You and the nerd.”

It really bugs me that they keep referring to Willow as the “nerd.”

“Her name is Willow,” I tell him.

“Sure, sure. But what’s up with that?”

“What?” I ask again.

The guys glance from one to the other.

Mario places his hand on my arm. “We’re worried about you, man. You rebounding to a nerd?”

“Willow.”

“When we said there are other girls, we didn’t mean her,” Vince adds.

I want to tell them the truth, but of course I can’t. If I’m going to get Vanessa back, I need everyone to think Willow and I are really together. I feel bad that I’m lying to them, but that’s just how it has to be. It’s only for a little while, anyway.

I dump more fries into my mouth. “She’s cool.”

They glance at one another again. Vince grabs a chunk of fries from my plate and scarfs them down. “Dude, she’snotcool. And everyone’s talking about it.”

Of course she’s cool. She’s a boss at tech and she created an amazing app. Not to mention her brain.

But my buddies wouldn’t understand that kind of cool.

“Can we drop this? Willow is my girlfriend and that’s that.”

My heart hammers in my chest when it dawns on me that fake dating Willow might throw me out of the popular circle. And that everything I’ve worked for the past few years will get flushed down the toilet.

Knox shrugs. “Okay.” He snickers. “Maybe our king will start a revolution andallof us will date nerdy girls.”

Vince scoffs. “Never.” He claps me on the back. “But you do you, man. If this is what you want, we support you.”

I don’t really need their support—I’m free to go out with whoever I want—but considering my status, it’s nice to know they’re being good friends now.

Maybe I was wrong to question their loyalty to me. But then again, they probably think I’m going through a phase.
