She thinks it over. “I hate lying to my parents, but you’re right. The only ones who know are my friends.”

I nod. “If you say we can trust them, then I’ll trust you. They seem like really good people.”

“They are. The best in the world.”

I give her a sad smile. I’m sure some of my friends—like Owen—truly care about me. But it’s not the same as her friends. They’re more than friends. More than family. It’s like they’re extensions of each other.

“You’re really lucky,” I say.

“Yeah. It’ll be hard to leave them after we graduate and I go to MIT.”

I lift a brow. “MIT? Nice.”

“Thanks. What do you want to do after you graduate?”

I sigh. “Not sure yet.”

“That’s okay, you have time.”

Not really. In less than two years, I’ll be done with high school and then what? I don’t have anyone other than the guidance counselor to talk to about my future. My friends never want to discuss life after high school. So yeah…I’m pretty much on my own.

“I should let you get back to whatever you were doing,” she says after a little while. Maybe she notices the turmoil going on inside me.

“Homework,” I say with a light laugh.

“Finished mine. I’m reading a book for book club.”

“Book club?”

She gapes at me. “Don’t tell me you don’t know that Edenbury High has a book club.”

“Sorry, no. That sounds interesting. I don’t like to read, though. Would rather game all day than pick up a book.”

She makes a face like I said the most horrible thing in the world. “Games don’t bring you the same satisfaction that books do.”

“Why not? Just like books can transport you to a different world, games immerse you in different worlds.”

She purses her lips. “Okay, good point. But books make you feel.”

“So do games.”

“Nope. Not the same.”

I smile in challenge. “Games actually place youinthe world. Do books do that? Don’t think so.”

“This argument is pointless and not logical,” she says. “You like your things and I like mine. And that’s totally cool. Not that it matters, anyway, because we’re not really dating.”

“Yeah. But friends can share their interests with each other.”

She lifts a brow. “Friends?”

“Yeah, if that’s okay?”

“Sure.”

“Nice.”

Quiet.
