“Wow. I’m so honored.”

His eyes meet mine and he stares into them for a beat. “I guess you’re the only person I feel comfortable enough with to say dorky things like that. Weird because we don’t know each other well.” He pushes his hair out of his eyes. “Anyway, shall we?”

“Yep.”

His arm is still wrapped around me as we get to the car, where he opens the passenger door for me.

“Thank you,” I say before getting in. “That’s kind of you, but unnecessary. No one’s watching.”

He grins. “I’m a gentleman whether or not people are watching.”

“I’m sure Vanessa liked that.”

He doesn’t say anything as he starts the car and we head for school. Then a few minutes later, he says, “Actually, she didn’t. Not at first. But my dad always taught me to open the door for a girl, so that’s what I did. It’s hard, you know? Knowing if a girl would be offended if I did something like that.” He pulls his gaze from the road to me. “What do you think?”

I shrug. “I’m not an expert, but I’d guess it depends on the girl. You open the door for her and if it upsets her, then don’t do it again. If she breaks up with you because you did that, then she’s not worth it.”

He nods slowly. “That makes sense. How do you feel about it?”

“I’m not the mushy gushy romantic type, so my heart won’t melt if a guy did that for me. I’d think he was sweet and considerate. But if he doesn’t, I wouldn’t be upset. Really, it’s whatever he feels comfortable with.”

“So would you mind if I open doors for you?”

I shake my head. “It’d definitely make Vanessa super jealous, huh?”

“I guess so.” He focuses back on the road.

I look out the window.

Quiet.

“How’s the app going?” he asks. “Any more downloads?”

“Yes! A lot. Thanks so much for all your help.”

He dips his head. “Of course. But remember, I’m gaining something from this, too.”

That’s true, but why do I get the feeling that he would help me even if he wasn’t getting something in return? I don’t know the guy well at all, but something tells me he would.

“Either way, I wouldn’t have gotten all those downloads without you. Gosh, I’m very curious about the results. If it fails, I’ve got nothing to submit for the competition.”

He places his hand on my arm, his gaze flicking to me before moving back to the road. “I have a feeling everything will be okay.”

I smile in thanks.

Quiet again.

“By the way, why did you save me from those jerks at lunch on Wednesday?” I ask. “I know you said us techies need to stick together, but it’s more than that, isn’t it? It looked like it bothered you that they were giving me a hard time.”

He shifts in his seat, keeping his eyes forward. He stays like that for a few seconds before shaking his head. “No, it didn’t bother me. Like I said, we need to look out for each other.”

I narrow my eyes at him. He’s totally lying, but if he doesn’t want to talk about it, I have no right to push.

We don’t really say anything to each other until he pulls into the student lot. There’s a whole crowd of people hanging around the entrance of the building, like any other day. Except today is not an ordinary day. As soon as we step out of the car, all eyes will be on us. On me. Just like yesterday.

Already kids have set their gazes on the parking lot, especially on a certain silver car that belongs to the king of school.

Colt turns to me. “Ready?”
