I grab my backpack. “Let’s do this.”

“Wait for me to get the door for you, please.”

He gets out, flings his backpack over one shoulder, then runs to my side of the car and opens the door.

“Thanks.” I climb out.

He holds out his hand. “If you’re okay with it.”

“I’m cool with anything.” I place my hand in his large, warm one. I’ve never held hands with a guy before. It feels nice. Comforting.

I know it’s not like having a real boyfriend, but I can kind of understand why my friends love holding hands with their guys so much.

Colt tucks me close to his body as we step toward the students. They all have their eyes pinned on us. In awe, shock, jealousy. I pretend they don’t exist. It’s just me and my good friend Colt heading toward the entrance of the building.

It’s hard to ignore their whispers as we pass them. A few sound so shocked, like they can’t believe what they’re seeing. I guess some kids think Colt had a brain fart when he asked me to be his girlfriend. But nope. I’m here to stay. At least until after the coding competition.

“What’s so great about her?” a girl whispers to her friend as we walk by. “She’s so…meh.”

“Yeah. She could have at least brushed her hair. Or done something about those nerdy glasses.”

“Sounflattering.”

Colt’s body stiffens and he tightens his hold on me. Does he think their words bother me? Ha. I don’t give a crap what they say or think about me.

But does it bother him? Will our arrangement destroy his reputation?

When our eyes meet, I realize heisbothered, but not for himself. He turns his head like he wants to say something to those girls, but I squeeze his hand. “I’m okay. Don’t worry about it.”

“Are you sure? What they’re saying isn’t right.”

“I’m sure. Just let it go.”

He reluctantly nods.

The kids continue to say such things, but again, it does nothing to me. Actually, it’s pretty hilarious. And not that I need to justify myself to anyone, but Ididbrush my hair this morning.

We finally enter the building and once again, heads turn in our direction. And like with the kids outside, everyone stares, whispers, points.

I felt a little uncomfortable yesterday, but it’s different today. Maybe because I’m not letting them get to me.

Colt, on the other hand, still looks pretty uneasy.

“You good?” I ask him.

He scowls. “No. I don’t like what they’re saying about you. Are you sure you don’t want me to put them in their place?”

“Totally sure.”

My friends and the guys are waiting for me at my locker. When we get there, Colt doesn’t remove his arm from around me. And it’s weird that I kind of don’t want him to…only because I’m a little cold.

“Hey,” I greet my friends.

Colt waves at them with a pleasant smile. “Good morning, everyone. How are you?” He turns to me. “See you later, Willow.” His other arm comes around me. “Enjoy your classes.”

“You know I will.”

He waves at me and my friends another time before making his way to his buddies down the hall. They also stare at me like they can’t believe what’s going on.
