I accept the call and smile as his face fills the screen. “Hey.”

He grins. “Hi, Willow. How are you?”

“Good. Hanging out with my friends.” I turn my phone to them so they can wave at him. He greets them with another warm smile.

“How’s your weekend so far?” he asks me.

“Fun. Sucks that it’s almost over.”

His eyes narrow as he studies my face. “You don’t look so happy. Is everything okay?”

“Yep. Well, not really.”

“Your app?”

I take a deep breath. “I guess I’m obvious, huh?”

“No. You just care about it, which is perfectly okay. It’s like your baby. You put so much time and effort into it.”

I nod. He totally gets it. “No new downloads over the weekend and user activity has gone down. Like, really down. But I don’t want to whine about my app all the time.”

From the corner of my eye, I spot my friends watching us, abandoning their books altogether.

Colt rubs his chin. “Maybe they forgot about us? We’re not in school, so they don’t see us and remember to interact with the app.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“Maybe we need to post pictures of ourselves together on Spill It!. Maybe go on a date and document the entire thing online. That’s sure to get you more downloads.”

“And make Vanessa jealous.”

“Sure, but I’m thinking more about your app. It’d be a shame for your hard work to go to waste.”

“Oh, thanks. That’s kind of you.”

“No problem. So…you want to do something today?” he asks.

My eyes shoot to my friends who are still watching me, Lily with a huge smile. Ugh. Is she at it again? “I can’t today. I’m hanging out with my friends—”

Lily snatches my phone. “She’s free today! One hundred percent free. Pick her up in…ten minutes? Cool. Bye!”

With a satisfied smile, she hands my phone back to me. “You’d better get dressed for your date!”

I glance down at my pajamas. We’ve all been so comfy reading on the sofas that we didn’t bother to change, or do our hair.

“Are you sure?” I ask my friends. “I don’t want to bail on our sleepover.”

Lily pulls me to my feet. “We can have a sleepover any time. You have a date with your boyfriend.”

“Fake boyfriend,” I correct as we go up to Ava’s room. “And it’s not a date. We’re hanging out and taking pictures for social media.”

She opens the drawer where I put my clothes and starts rummaging inside. “Ooh, wear this. It’s cute.” She holds up a T-shirt with theSwords and Legendslogo. Chloe and Liam’s gift to me from the convention they went to last month.

“Should you dress differently because the popular kids will see you, though?” Chloe asks.

I shrug. “Nope. Being myself is a big part of this. A tech geek like me managed to snag the popular guy. And the fact that she doesn’t have to change for him? It makes people talk. And more talk means more downloads and more activity.”

They nod with smiles.
