“You’d better get ready,” Ava says. “Your boyfriend will be here soon.”

I groan, grab a pair of jeans, then go to the bathroom to change. I’m in the middle of brushing my hair when the doorbell rings. I can hear one of the staff members talking to him downstairs. Their voices grow louder as they near Ava’s room.

“Looks like he’s here,” Lily tells me with another one of her knowing smiles. Ava and Chloe look just as excited as her.

“I wish you guys wouldn’t make a big deal about this,” I mutter.

Chloe gets up and places her hand on my arm. “Even if it’s a fake relationship, it’s still exciting to hang out with a guy, isn’t it?”

I shrug. “He’s nice, but it doesn’t mean anything.”

“Try to have fun, okay? You’ve been so stressed with your app and I don’t want life to suck all the joy out of you.”

She’s right. I don’t want to look back at my high school years and not remember having fun because all I did was work, work, work. Mom was like that when she was my age, until Dad showed her how to have a good time.

“Okay,” I say. “I’ll push my worries and problems away and have fun with my fake boyfriend.”

“Good,” a male voice says from the doorway. “I’m hoping to have fun with you, too.”

I whirl around and find Colt standing there with that kind smile.

“How long were you standing there?” I ask.

“Not long. A minute, maybe.” He walks over to me and gives me an encouraging grin. “You won’t have to worry about your app after today. Let’s give the kids something to talk about.”

I pat my hair. “Is my hair okay?” The second the words leave my mouth, I wonder why in the world I said that. I mean, it makes sense that I’d be worried how my hair would look online…right?

No!

“Perfect,” he tells me. He scans my T-shirt. “Swords and Legends? Nice. You’re a fan?”

I shake my head. “They’re fans.” I point to Lily and Chloe. “I just like wearing the comfy T-shirt.”

He chuckles. “Never got into the show. I would, but I’d rather spend my time…with my friends.”

Pretty sure he really meant to say coding or gaming.

He turns to my friends. “Hey, everyone. You have a beautiful house, Ava. Sorry to steal Willow from you guys.”

Lily waves her hand. “No, no, no! It’s totally cool. Take her away from us.”

“Gee, thanks,” I mumble.

Lily gives me a wide smile.

Colt glances from me to her. “Am I missing something?”

“Nope.” I glare at Lily. “My friends are being annoying. Let’s go.” Grabbing his hand, I lead him out of Ava’s room.

“Have fun!” Lily calls after us.

A staff member hands us our jackets, and after we thank her, we make our way out the door to Colt’s car that’s parked in front of the house.

I thank him when he opens the door for me and get inside. He runs around the car before getting in and starting it, pulling away from the mansion.

I check my phone. Not much activity.

At a red light, Colt wraps an arm around me, pulling me close as he holds his phone in front of us for a selfie. After he snaps the pic, he posts it on social media with the caption, “Me and my awesome girl on our way to an amazing date.”
