“Good thing I’m not Vanessa. Wait, what will the kids think? Us doing something they think is lame won’t impress them.”

He grins as he bends close. “I picked bowling for two reasons. One: it’s fun. And two: us doing this ‘lame’ activity would get them talking.”

“Right. The king of Edenbury High bowling? Maybe you’ll make it cool and change their opinion on it.”

He chuckles. “Not sure I have that much influence over our schoolmates.”

“You’d be surprised.” I place my hand on the door handle.

“Wait!” He shoots out of his side of the car, runs around to my side like he has super speed, and opens the door. “Let me get that for you, my lady.”

I get out. “You really don’t have to do that.”

“I want to.” He slings his arm around me and holds me close. “Time for another pic?” We smile at his phone and he posts the photo on Spill It!. “Nice. The other picture has gotten so many views and likes already.”

I check my phone. “I’m getting some activity on the app.”

He tucks me even closer to him. “Let’s bowl!”

After we’re all set up with a few games and bowling shoes, we head for our lane and Colt drops down at the computer to punch in our names.

I bend to see what he’s putting in. “Tech Queen?”

He glances up with a smile. “That’s what you are.” He taps his chin. “What should I be?”

“Easy. Can I?”

He stands and I lower myself in the seat. After I’ve added his name, he takes a look. “Mr. Popular?”

“Yep. Are you ready to get smoked?”

His eyes grow large. “Shouldn’t we encourage each other?”

I lightly whack my hand into his chest. “Where’s the fun in that?”

His face contorts with a challenge. “Okay, Tech Queen. We’ll see who’s the last man standing.”

“The lastwomanstanding.”

With my head held high, I start my first round. Ever since I was little, I figured out how to use math and angles to knock down as many pins as I can. Which results in me getting a strike. Even though I haven’t been here in years, the math hasn’t changed.

Whirling around, I give my “boyfriend” a smug smile. “Beat that, Mr. Popular.”

He holds up his hand for a high five. “Nice!”

With a grin, I slap his hand.

“The pressure is on!” I call after him as he fetches his ball and gets into position. He tilts his head from right to left, as if making his own calculations. Darn it. I forgot he’s also good at math and is probably using my strategy.

He also gets a strike.

As he returns to me, he holds up his hand for another high five. Grinning again, I slap his hand. “Good job. What’s your secret?”

He narrows his eyes playfully. “What’s yours?”

“Wouldn’t be a secret if I told you, would it?”

He chuckles. I never realized it before, but he has a nice laugh. His entire face lights up.
