His smile drops. “What?”

I quickly shake my head and throw that thought away. Out, out, out! “Nothing. It’s my turn.”

Colt claps and cheers for me as I retrieve my ball. My heart goes pitter-patter. It causes my hands to shake, resulting in me getting a split.

“Well, darn,” I grumble. “This is impossible.”

“You can do it!” Colt encourages with a warm smile. “Hey, is it okay if we take another pic?”

“Yep.”

He folds me in his arms and snaps another picture. He captions, “Having the best time of my life bowling with my special girl.”

I know his words are fake, but that weird tingly feeling enters my stomach again.

“Want help knocking those down?” he asks me.

It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell him I don’t need his help. But he’s being so sweet and he’s got such a kind smile on his face. “Okay.”

He takes my hand in one of his and holds the ball in the other, and then we step up to the lane. “Want to know my secret?” he asks. “I use angles.”

“Me, too!”

His eyes widen. Then he chuckles. “Of course you do.”

“But angles can’t really help here,” I say. “It’s split right in middle. Unless I knock the pins into each other, it’s over.”

He shakes his head. “Watch the master.”

He launches the ball. My jaw falls open as I watch the ball curve and knock one pin into the other. I get a spare.

I just gape at him. He gives me a goofy smile.

I think I’ve found my equal.

No one has ever used angles like me. No one has ever used math to showmehow it’s done. This guy…Mia said he’s the male version of me. Is she right?

Colt’s smile drops as he scans my face. “Sorry.” He glances away, brushing his hand through his hair. “I didn’t mean to show off.”

“No, don’t be sorry. That wasepic.”

Why is he so scared to show how brilliant he is? I know people would love this side of him. Although, maybe not the popular kids. But he doesn’t need them…does he? I have no right to tell him who he should be friends with, but it seems to me that he’s happier being his fun, goofy self. Maybe I’m wrong, though. I have no right to judge.

“What?” he asks.

I shake my head. “It’s your turn. Thanks for giving me a spare. Looks like you’re helping me win.”

He cringes in exaggeration. “Aw, man. What a dummy.” He shoots me a smile, then dashes to get his ball.

I smile as I watch him get a strike. “Yes!” I hold up my hand for a high five when he returns to me. “That was awesome!”

His arms come around me and he presses me to his chest. I’m a little thrown off by the hug. I thought we were high fiving. But this is nice. Really nice.

He draws back and stares into my eyes. “I’m having a lot of fun with you, Willow,” he murmurs.

I find myself staring into his beautiful green eyes, getting lost in them. It takes a second or two before I whisper, “I’m having a lot of fun with you, too, Colt.”

We smile at each other. He doesn’t remove his arms from around me and I don’t step away from him.
