“Without it, we wouldn’t have had any warning.”

My hands balled into fists as he turned to face me. I shot him the iciest glare I could. “Without it, Salenia wouldn’t have known she was a threat and would have left us alone. It’s just some self-fulfilling prophecy that set them against each other. The gods maneuvered all of this.”

“They know more than you and me about what is good for this world!” he shouted, finally losing the cool composure he forced all the time. “Salenia is a goddess. She was the first one to see the prophecy. She knows everything. My seeing it was a fair warning from the gods, that is it. Else none of us would know except Salenia, and she’d destroy us faster.”

“Then what? I let Olivia go to the castle?”

“We still have the element of surprise.”

I shook my head. “Astor is back at the castle. It’s only so long until he tells them Olivia’s alive.”

“She won’t know we’re on our way. With Malum Dominor’s help, we can get there.”

“I don’t trust them.”

“We have no choice.” He rubbed his forehead, ironing out the wrinkles forming. “The enemy of our enemy…”

“I know the saying,” I snapped, looking to the small window, letting in a small spray of yellow light into the room, illuminating the cleared desk and shelves. “I’ll agree to go along with this plan,” I said, hesitantly, not liking my hand being forced like this. “But I want you to tell everything. Zach filled me on your lesson last night.”

“He was listening,” he stated.

“Of course. Did you think I was going to go to sleep knowing she was planning her own demise?”

“So, you know about Vener and Anastasia.”

“Yes,” I said between clenched teeth. “Tell me who you think they are.”

“I burned the list.”

My eye twitched. “How convenient.”

“I wish I knew for certain. All I have are theories. Salenia’s good at covering her tracks.”

I let out a heavy breath. “Then you go to the castle ahead of us. Find out where they are.”

He arched a thin, dark brow. “Why?”

“Because you’re powerful enough to refrain from her messing with your mind and there’s a call for sorcerers to go to the castle, anyway. If you are on our side, then prove it. That’s where they’ll be, right?”

“Olivia needs protection.”

“She has me.” I glanced at the ceiling. “Erianna and Zach too, and you said yourself that she’s more powerful now. The spell book has helped her.”

“She needs more practice.”

“We need someone behind enemy lines.”

He paced in front of the fireplace. “If Salenia finds out what I’m doing...” he trailed off, and I let out a clipped laugh.

“So, Olivia is the only one who is supposed to sacrifice herself for this cause? I don’t think so. If you’re half as brave as everyone believes you to be, then you’ll do this.”

He halted, climbing his intrusive stare to meet mine. “How do I know you won’t take her away from Sanmorte?”

My chest tightened. He wasn’t wrong. Every part of me burned to get her the fuck out of here, but his words tinkled in my head.

‘She’ll be dead in a week.’“I won’t let her die,” I said. “You believe she’ll have a better chance if we all go against Salenia?”

“I do.”
