“I’m going to choose to believe you, but know this: if you screw us over I will tear apart this entire kingdom, including your home kingdom, until I find you. Powers or not, I will make it my life's mission to destroy you.”

“I believe you,” he said nonchalantly. “The soulmate bond is strong. I’m counting on it to save her in the end.”

I ran cold. “I’m counting on you, too.”

“I will find out who Vener is.”

I nodded, knowing if anyone could, it was him. I used to like Azia, somewhat, but with Olivia’s life in the balance, I couldn’t place trust in anyone outside of our family. I knew Zach, Erianna and Anna would never betray us. I supposed this would test if we could count on Azia. “I’ll tell them you’re leaving.”

“Don’t.” He waved a hand. “Your wife will only try to stop me. I’ll go now. I’ve asked Avyanna to meet us. She’ll escort you to the castle.”

“No.”

“She’s just as powerful as me.”

“That’s what makes me nervous. She led us out to the east of the city, to distract us so they could get into the house.”

He took off his glasses, flicking his fingers around them as a spell cleared the dirt gathered on the glass. “She is on our side. We’ve spoken about that. She did not know what was going on. She went out there because that’s where she used to live. She feels safe there.”

I laughed. “Is that a fucking joke? “How do you know she’s on our side? The timing was awfully convenient.”

“She’s always been against vampires. The destruction of the underworld benefits her. She has people she loves trapped there.”

“Then why did she tell me about Olivia dying? So, we could run? No fulfill the prophecy.”

“She cares more than you know. Us sorcerers look out for one another. I trust her and you should, too. She will protect you all.”

I growled. “I don’t need protecting and if you think I’m trusting her around Olivia…”

“Then stay close to your wife.”

I clenched my jaw. “You’re mistaken about her.”

“No.” He pointed a finger at my chest. “You are paranoid. I understand your fears, I do. But not everyone is a threat. We cannot afford to push away allies, especially one as powerful as Avyanna. Do you want Olivia safe or not?”

I balled my fists. “If Avyanna makes one wrong move, I’ll kill you her.”

He clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes as if I was no real threat to him. “You should hurry. You’ll meet her at the Malum Dominor headquarters in thirty minutes. I will send out any communication I can, if I’m not imprisoned the moment I get to the castle.”

I grasped his shoulder as he tried to force himself past me. “Fine. I’ll go, but you better play the part well,” I said. “Do anything, so she believes you. I know her enough. When I thought she was Gwen, she always protected me. There is loyalty there if she believes you’re on her side. If I could manipulate her, then you can too.”

Something changed in his eyes, his brows knitting together before he turned and left the room. The clock chimed seven, and I blew out a tense breath. It was time to go to the castle.

The entrance to Malum Dominor stood before us, and the streets were silent in the stillness of morning, evidence of previous festivities scattered around my feet.

“It's a pleasure to meet you,” she said.

“Yes, it’s good to meet you too.” Olivia cocked her head. “It seems you have a lot of thoughts about my future.” She pulled Avyanna closer, keeping their hands interlocked. “I don’t need anyone worrying my husband about things that don’t concern them.”

“I didn’t mean to offend anyone,” she said and let out a clipped laugh, looking at each of us in disbelief. “Us sorceresses must look out for one another.”

“That’s fine,” she said. “But in the future, keep your thoughts to yourself. Especially when they contradict what you supposedly want.”
