“Fuck you!” she spat through clenched teeth.

“No, thanks.”

“You really are an arrogant piece of shit.”

I watched her face turn red and heard her voice raise as I smirked. I knew I should stop, but the sight of her in such a vulnerable state was immensely gratifying. “At least I admit who I am.”

“I know who I am!” she shouted.

“Yeah, a jealous goddess who’s acting like a fucking bitch because her lover ran off with someone else. No wonder he fell in love with someone else.”

I’d gone too far. She grabbed the goblet, the one containing the last of the elixir, and threw it at me. The liquid oozed through the fabric, and I stood. “For an age old goddess, you sure are fucking childish. You have no control over your emotions and yet you expect this kingdom to accept you as their queen? It’s pathetic.”

“I should kill you!”

“Do it,” I challenged, extending my arms outward. “I fucking dare you.”

She clenched her fingers into fists against the table, then blew out a long, shaky exhale. “No, that’s far too easy.”

The elixir was gone and now I was really pissed. “Why did you cover the portraits of your siblings in the office? Can’t bear to look at them after everything you’ve done?” I pushed her, watching as she teetered on the edge of killing me.

“They locked me in my realm. Why would I want them staring at me? They’re fucking cowards, sending that bitch Olivia to do what they can’t. They want me dead, but they won’t do it themselves.”

My eyes shone as I took in her words. So, they locked her in the underworld. It wasn’t her own magic that did it. I wondered what else recorded in our history books was wrong. “Then…why haven’t you killed her yet?” I baited. “She’s there, in your dungeon, or are you too scared?”

She gripped the table, her murderous glare latched on mine. “You know nothing.”

“I think I do. You,” I said, enunciating each word, “are scared, hurt, and are delusional. You have no clue what you want.”

“I do!” she shouted again, leaning closer over the table. I breathed her vanilla perfume, her nose close to touching mine as I leaned forward too. “I want all of those who hurt me to pay for everything they’ve done to me,” she said. “I want Olivia dead, but the gods will just bring her back, again and again. We’re supposed to only bring a mortal back once. Even then, it’s only done under extreme circumstances. But they broke the rules. They’ll do anything to see me dead. I won’t send her to them.”

“Won’t she go to the underworld?” I baited.

She pulled back, grinding her teeth as she did. “She’s immortal, but not cursed with vampirism. No, she’ll go to them. I won’t have her gain more power. While she’s here, I know I’m safe.”

I arched a brow. “Until she kills you.”

“She doesn’t know how.”

“I bet she does.”

She laughed, her gaze swirling as insanity threaded her stare. “I’m guessing this was her idea?” she asked, gesturing to the spilled wine. “Did you truly believe I wouldn’t know that the elixir that comes from my veins was in that glass? Your plan would have never worked. It was foolish.”

Shit.

“Why not tell me you knew? You missed your chance to gloat.”

“We were enjoying dinner,” she said with a shrug, and lowered herself back into her chair. I did the same. “None of you are a threat.”

“Hmm.” I drank the last of Alana’s blood. “You say that, yet Seraphina is still locked in the dungeons. If she’s no real threat, let her go.”

“I don’t need to.” She stood, then shoved the plate away. The clock chimed midnight, letting out long twelve dongs. Her smile grew with each one. “It’s time.”

Goosebumps spread over my arms. “For what?”

“Why do you think I let you believe you were close to spiking me with the elixir? I needed you distracted.”

“Distracted for what?” My heart hammered in my chest. “You better fucking tell me right now what you’ve done.”
