“Why do you think that?”

“I’ve never… I mean… I don’t have any experience when it comes to sex. I can’t be who you need.”

A half a million dollars is a bargain.

“What makes you think anything you just said would make me want you any less?” There was no way I would ever let her walk out of here and let Caleb have her. If she blabbed to him that she was a virgin, she would be far more valuable to the men bidding on her. “I’ll make sure you never have to meet the man your father screwed over. That man with the snake tattoo will never hurt you again. No one will. I’ll protect you.”

Relief flooded her expression, but she wasn’t sold yet. Well, she was, she just didn’t know that I had already paid for her. She was going to be mine, but I had to make her think it was her choice.

“I’m not an unreasonable man,” I said. “I’ll give you some time to think about my offer.”

“I don’t know.”

“You’ll stay here, and then you’ll accompany me to my niece’s wedding. Like my daughter said, you’ll be my plus one. You’ll get to know me a little better, and then you can make your decision.”

“What will you do if I choose not to accept your deal?”

“You can leave here. You’ll take your chances on your own. I won’t stop you.” I would be out a lot of money, but she would be safe because the debt had been paid. Eventually, I would have to go after her father to recoup my money, but that was a problem for another day. Not that he could pay me in cash, but he would pay. “Give me a few days to help you make the right choice. You’ve got nothing to lose.”

That wasn’t entirely true. If she accepted my deal, she would give me what was now the one thing I coveted. Her virginity. The one thing she had to offer me as payment.

“If I do agree, how long would I have to stay here?”

“Do you have someplace else to be?”

She pressed her lips together and thought for a moment, but didn’t answer the question.

“Let’s see where we end up,” I said.

“I’ll go to the wedding with you.” When she stood, her dress rode up her thighs. “I can’t make any other promises.”

“You don’t have to make any promises.”You already belong to me.“You should join Cassandra now.”

“Thank you for the clothes.”

“It was my pleasure.” When I came toward her, she stumbled back, but I grabbed her wrist and tugged her to me. “It will be my pleasure to show you many other things too. To give you everything you desire.”

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this.”

“That’s what makes you so intriguing.”

Gazing into her eyes could prove to be dangerous. I could get lost in them. Become distracted. Lose control.

“Jude.” Luke knocked on the door.

“Come in.” I released Emmie from my hold. “Tell Cassandra I said to help you pack for the weekend.”

“Okay.” She tucked her hair behind her ear.

Luke stood in the doorway as Emmie left the room. He waited for her to walk down the hall before entering and shutting the door.

“I heard from Caleb. He accepted your offer and received the money.”

“Did he assure you he would leave her alone?”

“He was disappointed that he had to cancel the auction. He had some pretty impressive players on the list, but he knew that no one was going to pay what you did. He made out on this deal.”

Actually, he lost on the deal, but he would never know that.
