“Fuck you.”

“You know I’m right.”

If anyone else had spoken to me this way, I would have punched them in the mouth, but I had always let Luke say what had to be said because he was the only person in my life who gave me total honesty. He had never lied to me, and he always had my back.

“Caleb was going to sell her on the black market. Am I supposed to forget that?”

“You saved her.” He put his hands in the air. “She’s safe. She’s here with you. You can have her and still keep the peace. I’ll make sure Caleb understands that last night was a cheap shot, and we don’t work that way.”

“You can tell him I let Cobra live as a show of good faith, but that’s the only free pass he gets. If I see him sniffing around Emmie again, I’ll put a bullet in his head.” I stood and glanced out the patio doors, spotting Emmie and Anthony in the distance, taking Hellfire for a walk around the grounds. “You can finesse that any way you want as long as they get what I mean.”

“It’s a fair request. I’ll bring it to Caleb.”

“Thank you.”

Luke came to stand next to me.

“What are they doing?” I motioned across the yard.

“Emmie went to see the horses this morning, so Anthony is giving her the full treatment.”Luke stared out the window. “She’s very good with him. Kind and polite. Extremely patient.”

“I wouldn’t have expected anything less. She’s had a tough time of it herself.”

“I know.”

“Do you have anything else for me?”

“Josh,” he said. “I told him he could help around here. It’s a big property and we could use another set of hands.”

“Did he accept?”

“Reluctantly,” Luke said. “He was hoping for a position at the club, or maybe on the security team.”

“With his background?” Josh had been arrested two times in the past year. He dropped out of high school and couldn’t hold down a job for two months at a time. He was known for getting into bar fights and had a reputation for dating girls from wealthy families.

“Cassandra can really pick them.”

“I want him here so we can keep an eye on him.” I didn’t trust Josh, but if I refused him a job, my daughter would rebel. “Cassandra has a few more months of school. I don’t need any problems with her. She’s seeing this kid behind my back for a reason.”

“Her infatuation with him will fizzle out. It always does, and then we can cut him loose.”

“I hope so.”

I didn’t need any more problems. I kept my circle tight, while I protected those I cared about. My methods weren’t the most conventional, but they got the job done. I didn’t get this far by letting people take advantage of me.

I’ll be damned if I start now.

Chapter 13

Emmie

After spending the afternoon with Anthony and the horses, I came back to the house. I enjoyed spending time with him. He was sweet and didn’t scare me like the rest of the people around here.

“Thank you for walking me back to the house,” I said.

“Mr. Cordero would want me to look after you.” He smiled. “Do you want to see horses again tomorrow?”

“I would like that.” What else did I have to do? I was still finding my way.
