I gazed out at the morning landscape as I sat on the patio that overlooked the small island in South America. My home away from home. This villa had been my sanctuary for more than a decade. The clear blue water and the soft white sand helped calm my restless soul.

“Silva is on his way back to the airport,” Luke said. “He was pleased with our progress.”

Miguel Silva had been my cartel contact for years. He reported to a larger syndicate, but it wasn’t necessary for me to know who. I did what they asked of me, and they were happy. The risks I took for them were dangerous, but lucrative. They appreciated my loyalty.

“It sounds like they want to ramp up their shipment schedule after the holidays,” I said.

“We’ll be ready.”

“They don’t seem that concerned with Caleb and whoever his secret associate is.” I put some fruit on my plate. “I’m going to let it go for now and focus on what the cartel needs from us.”

“That’s a solid plan.” Luke glanced at his watch. “If you don’t need me, I’m going to meet up with a friend.”

“A friend?” I grinned. “Would her name be Maria?”

“I haven’t seen her in a few months, we have a lot to catch up on.” He tossed a grape into his mouth. “What are you and Emmie doing today?”

“I thought our meeting would take longer, so I told her she could go to the beach with Casandra and Bristol.”

“Go with them.”

“I’m sure my daughter would love to have her father on the beach with her.”

“We both know Bristol would.” Luke rolled his eyes. “That girl is relentless.”

“What has she done?”

“Now that you’re with Emmie, she’s moved on to me. I found her on my porch the other day.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“She baked me cookies.” He shook his head. “They were pretty good.”

“Luke.” I closed my eyes. “Please tell me you didn’t.”

“I ate the cookies, not her cookie.” He laughed. “You may like them young, but I prefer to stick with the ones closer to my decade.”

“I can talk to Bristol and tell her you’re not interested.”

“I already did, but that didn’t stop her from sitting next to me last night.” He waved me off. “It’s fine. She’s a kid. I can’t blame her for being infatuated with me though. I told her I’m not interested in high schoolers.”

“You better get out of here because here they come.” I smirked when I heard Cassie, Emmie, and Bristol coming out of the villa.

“I’ll see you tonight.” Luke hurried down the steps that led to the street.

The trio came out in their bikinis and beach bags, eager to start their day.

“Hello, ladies,” I said. “Johnny and Cory are waiting to escort you to the beach.”

Emmie came to me when I held out my hand for her.

“Is that necessary?” Cassie asked. “We’re only going a few houses down to the beach.”

“I think it’s necessary that three lovely young women be escorted to the beach when in a foreign country.” I looked Emmie over. Her yellow bikini barely covered anything, but it did provide me with a nice view. “Unless you’d rather I escort you.”

“I wouldn’t mind that,” Emmie said. “I thought you had a meeting.”

“While you slept, sweetheart, I worked.” I kissed her knuckles. “I’m free the rest of the day.”
