“You can take care of yourself,” I said. Jude was too determined to ever settle for what he had. He would always strive for more. No one would stop him.

“And everyone I care about.”

“I worry about you.”

“That’s sweet.” He tilted my chin and gently kissed my lips. “But you have nothing to worry about.”

Why don’t I believe you?

Chapter 26

Jude and Emmie

Jude

After my morning run, I sprinted home, ready to start the day. Luke and I had a hectic afternoon filled with meetings and shipments. We had no room for error. The cartel was moving something big tonight, and I needed to be at the club to receive it. My associates in Brazil warned me this was sensitive and discretion was a must.

As I prepared to shower, I noticed a scrape on my shoulder. It must have happened when I ran through the woods and brushed a branch. I opened the medicine cabinet but couldn’t find the antiseptic. I went to the guest room where Emmie still kept her things. As I approached the bathroom, I thought maybe it was time to move her into the master bedroom. She slept with me every night, but still kept everything in here.

Is that too big of a step? Does she prefer her own space?

Reaching into the cabinet, I glanced at a bag in the corner of the counter. I did a double take when I saw an unused pregnancy test kit sticking out of the top of the bag.

What the hell?

I pulled the test out, and a thousand thoughts ran through my head. The most prominent one:I can’t get her pregnant.I made sure of that a decade ago when I decided I didn’t want any more children.

I stormed out of the bathroom and down the stairs. Why would she need a pregnancy test? Why didn’t she tell me? Why hadn’t she taken it yet? If she thought she was pregnant, she would tell me. Unless…

“Emmie,” I shouted as I walked through the house.

I pushed open the door to the room where she liked to paint.

“Hi.” She smiled when she saw it was me. Was that the face of an angel or that of a demon? “I decided to paint that picture of Sasha I’ve been working on. Do you want to…”

She trailed off when she saw what I held in my hand.

“I found something of yours.” I tossed the test on the table. “Do you want to tell me why you would need that?”

“You went through my things?”

“I needed something from the guest room medicine cabinet, but that doesn’t matter since this is my house, and you left it out.” I pointed at the kit. “What the fuck, Emmie?” I shouted. “What is going on?”

“I bought it but I didn’t take it.”

“Obviously, but why didn’t you tell me you bought it?”Another fucking lie of omission.“Why do you keep doing that?”

“Doing what?”

“Lying to me?” I yelled. “Why don’t you understand that by being with me, you have to be completely honest.”

“Stop yelling so we can have a rational conversation.”

“Rational?” I shouted. “How can I trust you if you’re constantly lying to me, and while we’re on the fucking subject, how did you get pregnant?”

“I didn’t lie to you. I…” She set her paintbrush down on the ledge of the easel. “I’m not going to talk to you when you’re like this.”

“What?”
