I squeeze her hand before letting go. I’m not sure why there’s all of a sudden this—this, I don’t know what it is, but there’s something there between us—it’s just not a good time, and she’s too young for me.

With a hand on the small of her back I lead her to her family. Haddie and Joe’s mom hugs me tight. “If you need anything, anything at all, don’t hesitate to call us or come over.”

“Thanks, JoJo.” I shake Dylan’s and Ben’s hands before kissing Abby on the cheek. Joe pulls me into a back slapping hug. “Thanks for being there for me, brother. I love ya, man,” I say quietly.

“I’ve always got your back, okay?” He slaps me on the back and then I head to the limo.

I hold the straw to my nose and inhale the white powder up each nostril before rubbing some that was left on the mirror on my gums. I grab my tumbler filled with bourbon and swallow it down.

My phone rings, and when I pick it up, I see it’s Joe. I’m not in any condition to talk to him—I’m too fucking high and he’s a cop. I know he’d never arrest me, but I don’t want to put him in an awkward position.

Plus he’s living in his happy bubble since his son was born a few weeks ago. I, unfortunately, haven’t met the little guy because I’ve been too much of a mess.

It’s been a month since we buried my mom and I’m in a freefall. I know it and I just can’t muster up the energy to care or stop the fall. Luckily my job has been understanding, but I don’t think that’ll last too much longer if I don’t get my shit together.

My dad’s surprisingly doing okay, or as okay as a man can be after losing the love of his life. I pour myself another glass and drink it down. Tonight, I should’ve gone out, found some pussy, and buried my troubles between their thighs, but I’d be terrible company.

Leaning my head on the back of the sofa, I wait for the alcohol to work its magic.

I open my eyes to the sound of my front door closing. “What the fuck?” I groan. Pushing up, I sit on the side of the bed. When did I come to bed? I stand up and realize I’m naked and my bedroom reeks of sex.

Stumbling into my bathroom, I take a piss before climbing into the shower. I stand under the stream of hot water, letting it relax my sore, stiff muscles. Who was here? I’m freaked out that I have no clue what happened last night.

After my shower I feel semi-human and throw on cut off sweatpants and a sleeveless t-shirt. In the living room I don’t see my blow out—I hope it’s because I hid it.

Fuck, what happened? I can’t remember shit. I think I need to “Just say no” for a bit. I’m a dumbfuck who had sex last night and can’t remember it.

I pick up the rest of the garbage and am taking out the trash when the front door opens. “Oh great, you’re up. I figured you might be hungry.”

Turning my head I watch Haddie Carmichael walk toward me carrying a bag and a drink carrier. She sets everything down on the table and turns to face me. I scan her over closely and see that she looks sexy.

Her strawberry blonde curls are wild, hanging over her shoulders. Haddie’s lips look swollen, like she’s been thoroughly kissed and fucked, but there is no way it was me who did it…right?

“Aren’t you going to eat?” She shifts nervously as she stares at me.

I take a deep breath. “Haddie, what happened last night? Why are you here?”

Her face pales and I immediately feel like shit. “You-You don’t remember?” she whispers.

There is no way I could lie to her. “I was really fucked up,” I say as I shake my head. “Did we fuck?”

“I-I sh-should probably get going. Enjoy the food.” She’s out the front door before I can stop her.

I should go after her, make sure she’s okay, but this is for the best. I’m a mess right now and Haddie doesn’t need that. I hope the sex was at least good for her. On that thought I grab the containers she left and dig into the pancakes. Fuck, these are exactly what I needed, and I completely ignore how shitty I feel.

Once I finish breakfast, I slam some coffee before taking the other container of food over to my dad’s—my dad’s, not my parents’, just my dad. My eyes burn, but I quickly blink it away.

I pull a mint out of the glovebox and pop it into my mouth as I drive toward Dad’s.

Pulling into the driveway I see the grass is overgrown. I’ll mow it while I’m here. I grab my keys and let myself in. “Dad?” I holler.

“Chris?” I turn to find my dad coming down the hall. “This is a nice surprise. What’re you doing here?”

I hold up the container. “I had some leftover pancakes and thought I’d share.” He smiles as he takes them from me. I follow behind him into the kitchen, that’s a mess. “What’s going on here? Do you need me to hire you a housekeeper?”

Dad shrugs. “I don’t know. I guess. I’ve gone back to work and I’m trying to play catch up, which means I’m not here a lot.”

“I’ll make some calls,” I tell him as I pour myself a cup of coffee. I hold the pot up to him. “Do you need a warmup?”
