Breathe out.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

I repeated the exercise two more times, each time no easier than the first. My head swam, and the only thing keeping me upright was this wall. The hell did I just experience?

I shook my head, trying desperately to clear my mind, but the lingering images remained. Tyr swinging his axe. A giant black wolf lunging for him. Blood.

My hand pressed against my face. I was desperate to forget these feelings that came with those images.

“Diego?” Astrid’s hushed voice called.

I jerked my head up. Illuminated from behind in the dark house, Astrid stood in her bedroom doorway. Even in the darkness, I somehow could see the concern pulling at her brow.

I ran my fingers through my hair.Shit.This was not a good time. It wasn’t horrible for Astrid to see me like this, but she’d ask questions, and I wasn’t sure how to explain to her what was going on.

“What are you doing up?” I blurted out.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to study for my class.”

That was right. Not only was Astrid having to balance all the supernatural shit in our lives, she had enrolled in an online summer anatomy class. At the time, it’d seemed like a strange choice for her, but now, with her learning healing magic, it would come in handy.

She padded across the loft and came up to me, placing a gentle hand on my arm while I braced myself against the wall. Her brow furrowed, and she moved her hand to my chest and then touched my neck.

“You’re drenched in sweat.” She brushed my forehead with the back of her hand. “And you’re hot.”

I smirked, chuckling. “I’m glad you noticed.”

Her mouth twitched, and she shook her head. “That’s not what I mean, and you know it. Are you feeling unwell?”

I opened my mouth, and then closed it, running my fingers through my hair again. “No, I’m not sick… I think. I don’t know…”

Astrid cocked her head, and then her hand wrapped around mine. She tugged. “Come, sit down.”

She tugged again when I didn’t immediately comply, jolting me into motion. My gaze fell to our entwined hands, her warmth seeping through the touch, calming the frenzy in my mind.

The sway of her wide hips snagged my attention. The hypnotic motion, and the way her underwear cut high along them and shaped around her firm ass stirred desire in me. How I saw her so clearly in the darkness, I didn’t care.

The startling, intense urge to stop her short and bend her over consumed my thoughts so suddenly, I wondered if I really was unwell. The nagging, questioning thought didn’t linger, as I enjoyed the view she presented.

Astrid sat us down on the couch, her bare leg pressing against mine. “Talk to me.”

Her words snapped me back to my senses, and I met her gaze. Even in the limited light, I could see the way her green eyes sparkled with mirth. She knew exactly what I’d been doing, and she liked it.

I raked my hand through my hair. “I… don’t know how to put it into words. It doesn’t… it’s so bizarre.”

She brushed my cheek with a soft hand. “Say it however you can. We can piece it together from there. After everything I’ve gone through the last week and change, I’m not sure if anything can surprise me.”

I worked my jaw. “It was so confusing. More like flashes than one straight visual. But I saw Tyr… and he was fighting with this enormous black wolf with gold eyes.”

I heard Astrid audibly stop breathing. I pushed on.

“It wasn’t as big as Fen, but still bigger than a wolf should be, and it had some sort of scar on his face. And it was… bloody. There was so much blood. But I didn’t know where it was coming from, because they weren’t bleeding.”

I clamped my eyes closed, the visuals threatening to return. “And then, when the wolf came at Tyr—”

I shook my head. “I didn’t see how it ended.”
