“Because, Valkyrie, people becoming immortal or being born as one isn’t all that rare of an occurrence. Sure, it’s not happening in the thousands every day, but I’d be willing to bet a few hundred every century isn’t that far off. And there’s no set reason why.”

“But there has to be one.” I couldn’t let this go. It nagged at something in the back of my mind—something big.

“I can think of two possible explanations, and one is impossible.”

I gestured for him to continue. “Well?”

“One of his parents is either secretly a creature of the supernatural or has such ancestry that’s now activating in him, or he’s a dragon. The scales would make me think the latter, but that’s impossible.”

Diego and I passed each other a look. “How is that impossible? Dahlia is a dragon.”

“Because there’s only ever been three dragons. The first three were sisters: Urd, Skuld, and Verdandy, now going by the name Artura.” His brow furrowed. “Or siblings. Aya told me Skuld had taken the form of a man in more recent centuries, so I’m not sure if sisters is the correct way to describe them anymore.”

He repositioned himself. “Kirby came into conflict with Skuld… a year and a half or so ago now, I think from what she told me, and it resulted in Skuld’s death. Dahlia is a child of Skuld, from what Aya explained to me, so it’s not hard to guess that Fate wants to keep balance by making sure when one dragon falls, another replaces them.”

“So, what, dragons just have a bunch of potential dragon kids running around, just in case?” I couldn’t hide the slight disgust I felt at the idea.

Tyr shook his head. “I doubt it. The three siblings are considered the oldest beings in all creation. They shared the first stories, the ones we now know as the world prophecies, with anyone who would listen. I don’t know what Skuld was doing when they had Dahlia. Given the dragons were the first to be gifted clairvoyance, it is possible Skuld saw their death and tried to have a new dragon ready to take their place. That’s, of course, if all children of dragons are born with dragon souls. Not even gods are guaranteed to have children with immortal or god souls.”

“Well, my mom is dead,” Diego murmured. “We scattered her ashes, so there’s no way I’m some secret dragon child.”

I slid my hand into his. This had been insensitive of me. I should have been more careful. “Sorry. Between your vision last night and now this, I just wanted to make sense of everything.”

Tyr’s brow pulled together. “Vision?”

Diego nodded. “I guess that’s what it was. Normally I’d say it was a dream, but I was awake this time.”

I tipped my head. “You never told me you’d had similar dreams.”

Diego shrugged. “I always figured they were just dreams. Last night was the first time I had one while awake. It’s also the only one that was unpleasant.”

“What did you see last night?” Tyr asked.

Diego recited what he remembered, and Tyr nodded. “That was too accurate of a depiction of the shifter for it not to be clairvoyance.”

“Is it normal for them to happen as dreams?” I asked. “My mother Randi only ever had hers when awake.”

Tyr shrugged. “I’m not the one to ask about that. Aya would be more likely to know. Any form of magic that could benefit in war, she made sure to understand.”

“I did tell her about it,” Diego said. “I’m just waiting for her to come home after she said she’d investigate… however she planned to.”

“Then we wait for her to get back to discuss further.” Tyr hauled himself onto the bed. The mattress dipped, and I fell into him. He slid his hand along my lower back to my hip. “In the meantime, I can think of something far more fun to pass our time.”

Diego leaned closer. “I’m keen.”

I clutched my blanket tighter to my chest, my eyes flicking between them. “What are you two doing?”

Diego’s fingers skated along my shoulder. “While you were lost in your own world and walking off the property to be harassed by a shifter with a small-dick complex, the two of us talked.”

“About?” From their hungry gazes and lack of care the other was in the room still, I had a good idea, but I needed to hear the words—that I no longer needed to agonize over this decision.

“Us.” Tyr grasped my chin and turned my gaze up to him. My heart skipped a beat. “We both want you, and are willing to give this a hard go, if you are, too.”

Heat bloomed in my chest. “You want to? You don’t feel like you’re forced to make this decision?”

Diego’s fingers brushed my cheek. “We make this choice willingly.”

I bit my lower lip. While this sounded amazing, I couldn’t ignore the small bit of twisting in my gut. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to handle this, because, yes, I would like to try this, but I’m also feeling… guilty. Making you two accept that you won’t have me to yourself means I need to do the same, and—”
