Astrid disappeared and reappeared in the kitchen. I shook my head. “That’s also new.”

She smirked. “I actually remembered how to do this the night of the festival, but I’ve now got actual practice, and I didn’t land my ass in any trees by accident.”

She seemed so proud, and the context of that feat was lost on me.

Tyr snickered. “No, you just ended up in the rafters of a house three kilometers away.”

My brows shot up, and Astrid pointed at him with narrowed eyes. “Hey! Still wasn’t a tree.”

Ùna offered Astrid a mug of brewed tea, perfectly sweetened with honey, according to Astrid, which was a feat in my book, since she had her special ratio: insane amounts of honey more than actual tea. While she enjoyed her tea, Tyr filled Darius and me in about Astrid’s first time trying to teleport in her first life.

I was roaring with laughter before he even got to the part about Kirby having to come to her rescue. Darius teased her and Astrid stuck her tongue out between enjoying her tea.

“So, what was that red ribbon spell that freaked Fen out?” I asked.

Astrid blinked and then summoned the ribbon. “Oh, this? Just a little thing I made on a whim once to mess with Fen and Tyr.”

Darius leaned back on the couch. “Ah, so the family stories are true. You did make that, unlike the reinvented myth.”

Astrid made a face. “Yeah, jerks stealing my credit.”

I was so confused. But before I could find out more, Astrid’s phone rang.

She pulled it out of her back pocket and read the screen. Smiling, she answered the call. “Carrie, what—”

A low, raspy chuckle answered her. My spine straightened, dread shivering through me.

“Who is this?” Astrid said, her face growing serious.

“Oh, you know who this is.” I sharpened my senses to hear better. This was not good.

“Garmr, what the fuck do you want?” Astrid snarled. “And what have you done with Carrie?”

Tyr and Darius jumped up off the couch, their attention intense.

He chuckled again and then someone else spoke on the line. A feminine, alto voice that sounded too similar to Astrid. “She’s safe for now, dear. As are all your other friends. But I can’t promise they will be if you don’t cooperate.”

Astrid’s face twisted in a silent snarl. “What do you want?”

“Meet us at the town square. Alone. You have five minutes, darling.”

The line went dead.

I was already moving to Astrid. “Astrid, don’t—”

Her mug smashed on the floor.

She was gone.

Chapter Thirty

Astrid

Silence.

Silence was all that greeted me in the usually active Saturday afternoon of this small town.

No people.
