Of course, the defiant side of me wanted to agree with Aya and give the universe the middle finger. But that side of me was foolish and impulsive, and shouldn’t be listened to.

When I walked into my room, Angel lifted her head from where she lounged in my bed.

“Huh, that’s where you went.” Normally she wanted to sleep wherever I was.

My dog repositioned herself, hamming it up. After laughing and setting my laptop down, I jumped on the bed and curled into her. I rubbed her belly. “I don’t know what to do, girl. My head is so messed up.”

Angel rolled into me and licked my cheek. I pulled her into my arms and buried my face in her coat, inhaling deeply. Calm flooded through my mind, and all chaotic thoughts dissipated until my mind emptied.

I inhaled again, my eyes growing heavy. A nap to forget all about this problem sounded wonderful right now.

My eyes snapped open when a hard breeze whipped my hair. With it came the stench of blood, bile, and vacated bowls. Weariness clung to me, so deep that I felt it not only in my bones, but in my soul. What the hell? Where am I?

“We need to get to the others.”

I turned my attention to a tall man with long chestnut hair.Tyr?He looked different, mostly because of the clothes and hair, and the fact he had two hands, but it was most definitely him.

My head nodded, as if agreeing with him, even though I had no idea what was going on. I opened my mouth to speak, when a wolf snarling interrupted whatever I was about to say.

I whirled around and my heart lurched. A horse-sized wolf prowled toward us.The hell? How the fuck is a wolf this large?

Blood caked its black fur, plastering it to a frame that didn’t seem all that healthy, and the beast walked with an awkward gait, as if injured. Its golden eyes pinned its full attention on me. My pulse raced. It’s him…

But instead of shrieking and running away like I wanted to, my body reacted in a completely different way. A gasp came from my mouth. “Fen, are you all right? Do you need healing?”

Fen? As in Aya’s brother-in-law?No, that couldn’t be right. This was a monstrous wolf. But why did it feel like I was correct?Fenrir? And what did I mean by healing?

The wolf only responded by prowling closer, his lips pulling back into a chilling snarl. My brain screamed to run. This wolf was dangerous. ThatIwas in danger. And yet, this odd dream-version of me didn’t agree.

I stepped forward, hands reaching out. “Fen, what’s wrong? Are you in pain? I can help.”

“Astrid,” Tyr warned.

I stopped and looked back at him, confused by his caution.

“Don’t get any closer to him. He’s not in control of his wolf.” Tyr advanced, weapon at the ready. “Fen, you need to come out of that form. I need to talk to you, but not man to beast.”

Things happened in a flash. Fen snarled and then lunged. Tyr readied to fight this wolf, when he pivoted unexpectedly. My heart raced at the sight of the approaching teeth. I flung my hands up, as if that would do something. Nothing happened. I backpedaled and screamed.

Teeth sunk into my neck. Agony exploded through my entire body. My lungs seized and the stench of fresh blood filled my senses. My eyes met his crazed, hungry golden ones, then he disappeared.

“Astrid!” Tyr shouted.

My vision blurred and my senses dulled. He was there, but I didn’t know where.

“Hold on, Astrid. Hold on.”

I couldn’t breathe. My vision darkened.“Freyja, please… take care of him for me. He’ll need… you…”

Cold seeped in along with the emptiness that surrounded me, and then I heard his voice one last time. “I vow to find you, Valkyrie. No matter how long it takes. I will not rest until I do.”

My eyes snapped open. I lurched upright in my bed, gasping for air and scrabbling at my neck. My pulse pounded in my ears. The fuck was that?
