Mortal…“I was immortal once… right?”

“Yes. At some point after you and Tyr married, you unlocked the ability to become immortal. But you aren’t anymore.”

I chewed my lip. So much still swirled in my mind, and it wasn’t easy to process it all. “Am I… magic?”

Wow, Astrid, great full sentence there.

Aya chuckled. “You’re pretty damned magical, yes.”

I rolled my eyes, and she laughed.

“But seriously, I believe you do have magic in this life. How, I’m not exactly sure, because we learned over time that it’s usually a hereditary trait for mortals. You may not cast spells and heal like you had back then, but the way you interact with people and make them feel better, it’s far faster and better than any therapist I’ve seen. I think, perhaps, because you didn’t have the same exposure to magic like in the past, it’s been leaking out differently.”

I chewed my lip. A memory surfaced of me screaming, and a man with a weapon going flying. “I think… I think I did use magic like in the past.”

Aya’s brow rose, and she waited.

“Remember when I put Ben in the hospital?”

She grunted. “Sure do. The shit deserved that one.”

I tried not to laugh. When she posed as Randi, she’d had some choice words about Ben and rewarded me with ice cream every night for a week, and several gaming and movie marathons. “I didn’t touch him. Yet he flew through that wall, regardless.”

Her eyes squinted. “That does make sense. The doctors claiming you had an adrenaline rush was a decent way to explain it, but not even I was convinced that was what really happened. And the first time you used magic in your first life, it was in a similar way, but to protect your father.”

“And if I’m honest, I think I used it for the first time when I was attacked by our dog,” I said. “I shouldn’t have come out of that with just a scar on my face and arm.”

She nodded slowly. “I can’t deny that, either. I think that settles it, then. If you had training, you’d be capable of casting magic like before.”

“Is that you offering?” The prospect sounded promising. Seeing this magic may solidify what the hell I was experiencing right now.

“Of course. I trained you alongside your mother back then; I’ll do it now. And maybe the more you remember, the easier it will be for you to pick it up.”

I liked the sound of that.I like the idea of actually being someone special. Even if only a small number of people know.

I frowned. Diego wouldn’t be one of them. He was my best friend, and sure, I kept some things from him, but I’d never had to keep something so big a secret. It made my gust twist.

Aya cocked her head. “Something the matter?”

“Just thinking.”Actually…“I have another question. It’s about when I told you the dilemma with my feelings for both Diego and Tyr. You had the perfect opportunity to steer me toward Tyr, but you didn’t. And over the years of knowing you as mycollegefriend, you constantly teased me about my relationship with Diego, as if you were pushing me to pick him. Why? Why would you do that when you knew Tyr was looking for a second chance?”

She gave a nonchalant shrug. “Because I want you to be happy. That’s my first priority. If you would be happy with Diego, then I want that for you. If you wanted Tyr more, then I’d push you two together with reckless abandon.”

I let out a laughing snort. Sounded like her.

“My point is, both are great options for you. Which is also why I said you can have them both. We gods don’t often settle down with one person. Tyr is one of the rare exceptions. Even you, after some time with your immortality, were on the path of taking another partner.”

My brow furrowed. No memories came up to solidify or contradict her claim. “I was?”

She made a thoughtful noise. “Maybe it’s best you don’t remember that. At least, not right now.”

The creases in my forehead deepened. What was she not telling me?

“Anyway”—she waved her hand—“you’d have more fun with both of them, so I still say pick them both.”

I rolled my eyes. “With everything going on, dating is the last thing from my mind now.”

Aya winked. “Never said dating. Sex is a great distraction. And mood booster.”
