“Yeah, okay. That’s a good idea.” Alec turns to his sister, silently asking if that compromise will work for her. When she nods her head, Alec seems to sag in relief. He carries on with the meeting, handing out orders and assignments and getting shit squared away.

I don’t love the idea of leaving Anya in the midst of all this shit, but I don’t really have a choice. Alec made it clear that watching after his sister was my number one priority right now. So if he’s sending me, then it means that he has no other choice for one reason or another. I’ve never questioned it in the past, and I’m not going to start now. I’m just thankful I don’t have to leave until the morning, so at least I can get Anya settled at my place. And if I have my way, even when this shit is all done, she won’t be leaving.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Sebastian

“You sure you’re alright, man? You seem distracted.” My attention moves from the building in front of us to Collins who’s standing at my side. We’ve been on this job for three fucking days because the guy hasn’t been alone for a single second. The client gave Alec explicit instructions to not draw attention to the hit. Which means that taking him out with a sniper rifle, or even making it seem like suicide is out of the question. Our best bet is poison that can be disguised as a heart attack. It’s easily done, but we have to have the opportunity to make it happen.

“Yeah, I’m good. I’m just fucking over this.” I jerk my head toward the building and Collins nods in understanding.

“Seriously, huh? Who would’ve thought that a piece of shit who steals from his clients and colleagues and fucks his boss’s wife would have so many fucking friends.”

“I sure as fuck don’t get it.” Collins lets out a low chuckle.

“You do know you can talk to me though, right?” I turn and look directly at him, and he looks uncomfortable as fuck, which in return makes me a little uncomfortable. “I mean, I know we’re not the type of guys who sit around and talk about their feelings and shit, and I’m more than okay with that. But you’re probably the closest thing I have to a best friend. So I’m here for you if you need it.” I almost laugh at the fucked up, roundabout way he just said he cares about me. But I get it. I’m not sure about everything Collins has been through, but I know he had a shit childhood. Possibly even worse than mine if the giant scar on his face has anything to do with it. So him even taking the time totryand tell me he cares means a lot.

“Thanks man. Same to you.” He looks at me for a second, then gives me a sharp nod and turns back to the building in front of us. Right then, a catering van pulls up in front and a feeling of relief and anticipation thrums through me.Fucking finally.

“Let’s get this show on the road.”

We take the long way around the block and to the back of the building, avoiding any cameras. When we got word that the company was bringing in catering for their board meeting, we finally saw an opportunity. Tanner was able to get with one of his contacts who just so happens to have an in with one of the best catering companies in the city. We stand by the back door, waiting until it’s opened for us and we’re let inside. The guy that lets us in isn’t exactly what you’d expect. He’s probably barely six feet, and is what you would consider lanky and even a little pasty. But his eyes are sharp and intense. Knowing.

“This way.” He leads us through a long hallway until we reach a small corridor that has the staff kitchen on one side and door on the other. He opens the door to what is clearly storage.

“He has special dietary restrictions,” he says once the door is closed. “Him and four other people can’t eat red meat. Once we get the food plated, the rest of the staff will start serving the salad, and that’ll be your best opportunity. I’ll be back here the entire time and can ensure he gets the right plate.” I don’t like the idea of having to depend on someone else to make sure this job goes off without a hitch. Especially someone I don’t know.

“Why exactly can’t you just do it?” Collins asks, and it’s a good question. We usually do our own dirty work, but if we get help like this, it’s not that uncommon for our contact to help with the administration. He shakes his head firmly.

“I told Tanner that I’ll help get you the opportunity, but I keep my hands clean.” I’m not going to question him anymore. If Tanner trusts him, then there’s no reason why we shouldn’t.

“Alright. We’ll just wait here until you give us the word.”

It’s only about fifteen minutes before there are three soft but sharp knocks on the door and Collins immediately opens it. We’re quick as we locate the meal intended for our target and sprinkle it with the concoction Tanner provided us. I swear the dude may look like the all-American boy, but he has a deadly as fuck mind. Not only is he a whiz on computers and pretty much all modern-day technology, but he’s basically a master chemist too. He can whip up acids and poisons as easily as someone can make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s both terrifying and fascinating as fuck.

Once Collins has everything ready to go, I shoot off a quick message to Tanner letting him know it’s set. His reply is immediate.

I have eyes.

“We’re good,” I say to Collins and give the guy a quick nod. “Let’s get out of here.” We use the opportunity of an empty kitchen to go out the same way we came in. Again, we go the long way around the block and to our car that’s waiting in a large parking lot with probably three hundred other cars.

“You sure you’re good, man?” Collins asks when we get back to the car and my spine straightens at his question. I’ve been trying to be as conspicuous as possible. I haven’t even given in to the temptation of calling or texting Anya even though I feel fucking desperate to talk to her.

“I’m fine, why?”

“You just seem more eager than normal to get a job over with.” I silently breathe out a sigh of relief. I can work with this concern.

“Well yeah, this fucker is boring as hell. We’ve spent the past three days watching him get his rocks off. I’m over it.” Collins laughs, and thankfully seems to buy my annoyance. I am annoyed with this job, but that’s not the reason why I’m so eager to get out of here.

“Well we can’t leave until we get word from Tanner, and that’s probably going to be another hour or so. Wanna go grab some food?” When we use these types of methods to take people out, we’re always expected to wait around until it goes into effect. Tanner will let us know once the guy is officially dead, then we can move the fuck on. And since it is lunch time and I haven’t eaten yet today, I’m fucking starving.

“Yeah, let’s do it.”

“Let me know if you need anything else.” Neither one of us misses the innuendo in our server's tone. And with the way she’s eyeing us, we’d have to be especially stupid to not understand her offer.

“Thanks.” It’s not the first time Collins and I have received offers like this. We look dangerous, and women tend to like walking on the wild side. I’ve had plenty of threesomes in my life, but it’s always been with multiple women. I’m too fucking possessive to share with another guy. I don‘t know if they’re Collins' thing, but if they are, he’s quiet about it. So whenever we get an offer like this, neither one of us even lets them think we’re entertaining the idea. If Collins wants her, he can go for it. But I’m not interested at all.
