I wasn’t going to stand here and listen to the times my ideas didn’t go in our favour, but once out of every hundred times was a win. Right? He’d asked for my opinion, meaning he was stuck on ideas. Therefore, we’d roll with mine.

“Fine. We’ll go your way for now, then reassess,” he confirmed like he was the one who made that decision. I snorted a laugh and flicked the cigarette on the floor, stubbing the cherry out with my shoe.

I spotted Lizzie—Milla’s best friend—sitting in the corner of the canteen by herself and wandered over. She noticed me when I neared.

“Hey, Texas. Everything okay?”

I always liked this girl, but never in that sense, though. Lizzie was generally a nice person. It helped that she not so subtly slipped us updates on Milla while she was gone—that she was okay to stop us panicking when she left so hastily. We ignored her after a while, not wanting to know anything about the girl who fucked us up and over.

Now I wished I had more of an insight into the girl she’d become, seeing as she had dropped herself back on our stomping grounds. Milla felt like a completely different person even when features of her were still the same. She’d changed a lot.We all had.

“Lizzie.” I smirked, turning the chair back to front and sat. I rested my arms on the back as my legs spread either side. She rolled her eyes. “Where’s our girl?”

“Our girl?” She smiled.Ah, fuck.

I scowled. That wasn’t meant to come out. It was a slip of the tongue, that was all.

She linked her hands together and placed them before her, leaning forward on the table between us and donned a serious expression. “Now you’re snooping for scraps of information aboutour girl?”

I’d not seen this girl’s firecracker side, but I could tell it thrummed firmly under her skin waiting for the right moment to make its entrance. As I didn’t actually have an issue with her, I decided not to tempt that.

“Forget about it, I was never here.” I winked at her, I leapt up and spun the chair back under the table correctly.

As I turned round, my gaze snagged straight ontothegirl who was making her way over with an unimpressed look on her face.Tough luck, this is my campus to do as I please.

“Can I help you?” Milla quizzed and placed her lunch onto the table but stayed standing. Out the corner of my eye I saw a small smile playing on Lizzie’s mouth like she was totally here for the showdown with popcorn included.

I tilted my head, making it obvious I was checking her out. I mean, she could help me…Woah, back up, Texas. However, my thoughts were now filled with ideas on ways in which she could be very helpful indeed.

“Erm, hello?” She waved her hand in front of my vision closely and I grabbed her wrist, pulling her straight into me. She sneered, trying to break my hold but it wasn’t happening. I was stronger than her.

“Mmm, you feel and look good pressed up against me,” I admitted quietly in her ear just for her to hear. She only came up to around my chin.

Her breath hitched, and she shivered in desire.Got you. At least our bodies still synced, I knew they would. But it wasn’t like I’d had her in an intimate position close to me like this before. It was more like her hopping on my back as a kid and carrying her around when she refused to move her little ass and hugs when she dished them out freely. Milla had fire back then; it seemed to have amplified now.

“In your dreams,” she replied.

“Oh, you’re in them floating around and doing some questionable things, don’t worry.” I smirked. “Bet I’m in yours, too.”

“You wish,” she said, lying through her teeth. I guaranteed that I made an appearance in hers.

For now, I’d let it slide. What am I doing?I dropped her wrist and pushed her away from me, she stumbled back. I swear that even touching her burned through me and hunger overrode logic—a tiny part of me loved that.I need to get out of here.

So, I turned my words into weapons and shoved them down her throat.

I sneered. “You’d be lucky to even get a shot with me, it’s you who should be wishing. Thing is, I don’t play around with little girls, only women, and you’re majorly lacking. So, you’re completely cut from that category for starters. You’re insignificant. Remember that when you leave the state hastily again. Let’s see how long it takes you to pack your bags this time.”

I was certain I caught an inkling of hurt in her eyes from my comment before she shuttered those emotions and her face transformed into a bored, blank look. I looked her up and down once more, but this time with disgust written all over my face. She wasn’t the only one who could perfect a different mask.

I turned and strode out the canteen like I didn’t have a care in the world, when in fact I had a whole host of them. The main ones right now began and ended with her.I’m such a cunt.

At least I could inform Hollis my concept had started to pan out. Milla would be gone soon enough and forgotten again from our memories, and we could get back to normality without this extra awareness that shone around her and tugged us in.

The problem with me was that I had a habit of sabotaging the things I wanted the most.
