He shrugs, face still blank. But then I catch a lip twitch and shake my head.

“While I enjoy seeing you, you have the uncanny ability to always come into town when I’m extremely busy.” I pick up the menu.

“You’re always extremely busy. Do you even have hobbies?” he quips.

“What are hobbies?” I deadpan.

He chuckles. “My point, friend.”

“Not that I’m complaining, but you’ve been in Indy more than normal. What does King have you up to these days?” I settle for getting a steak and place my menu back in front of me on the table.

“He’s opening a satellite office here in town. I’ve been working on hiring out the finance department. This trip is training.”

“Since when does the VP of finance handle training and hiring? Don’t you have minions for that?”

He snorts. “I do, and they’ve done a lot, but I don’t want to be one of those stuffy old VPs who don’t take interest in their department.”

“You’re thirty-five. You’re not old,” I mutter.

“Right, but if I get stuffy now, I’ll get old quicker.” He smirks.

“So you want to be the cool, hip VP that everyone loves,” I summarize.

“Bingo,” he snaps. “Plus, I just needed a change. Traveling is fun.”

“You just got this promotion a year ago. You’re already bored?” My brow quirks.

“Nope, just wanted some new excitement.” He takes a drink of the already poured water. A few minutes pass with small talk and we order. The next thirty minutes, we talk about what’s been keeping me busy at the office and more about what he’s up to in New York.

Charlie works for King Cosmetics, one of the largest cosmetic lines in the United States. He started in the finance department right out of grad school, but being buddy-buddy with the owner’s son for years gets you a top promotion when said son takes over the family business.

Our plates are cleared away and his Elmo Cola and my Journeyman Manhattan are placed in front of us.

“So you dating yet?” Charlie asks.

I cough at the change of subject. “Just when I was starting to enjoy this dinner,” I mutter.

“Dinner is over. And I’m guessing it’s the most enjoyable meal you’ve had with another person in months.” His face is smug. My thoughts flash to my lunch a few weeks ago with Cassie. I haven’t seen her since, but the thought of her smile and her laugh is still fresh in my mind.

“You’d be incorrect,” I tell him.

His brows rise and he leans forward. “Oh, do tell, my friend.”

“No.” I take another sip.

“Oh, come on, man. It’s breaking news if you’re dating. I gotta know.”

I shake my head because he’s way off base. “No, there’s nothing to tell because I’m not dating anyone.”

“But you said I was wrong.” He scratches his chin. “Meals with Nora don’t count.” He glares.

“It was just a lunch. Weeks ago. It wasn’t even a date.” I swirl my glass.

“Boring. I’m truly bored with you right now.” He looks disgusted but doesn’t say anything else.

“I don’t know why. You know relationships aren’t my thing. Not anymore,” I remind him.

His shoulders slump. “Dude, things with Nevaeh ended what, five years ago?”
