“Six.”

“Fuck, man, what she did was nasty, not arguing that, but let that shit go. Move on.” He’s shaking his head in disbelief.

“I have let it go. She doesn’t matter to me. Hell, I haven’t thought about her in years. But what she did, not as easy. Makes you realize that relationships, ones that are supposed to be forever, are nothing but a lie.” Call me cynical. I don’t give a fuck.

“So you’ve committed to a life of celibacy and loneliness?” His eyes widen.

“Hell no, I’m not celibate and work keeps me from being lonely.”

“So friends with benefits? No, you’d have to make time for friends to get the benefits, so fuck buddies? That’s how you wet your whistle?” He nods.

“Fuck,” I say under my breath. He’s crude.

“Oh, do you use that app? Match Me? We have it in NYC too. It’s a hookup app. Okay, that makes more sense.” He takes a drink.

I’m over this conversation, I think of how to change the subject as I look around the large restaurant. That’s when I do a double take. Up on the second-floor balcony is Cassie.

She looks hot as sin, her blond hair in curls, down and over one shoulder, but she also looks bored as hell. That’s when I notice she’s not alone. Of course she’s not alone. But seeing her with another man stirs something unexpected inside me.

“Shit, if looks could kill right now,” Charlie says, bringing my attention back to him. “You know her?”

I take a sip of my rye, sneaking another glance at her.

My tablemate whistles. “She’s hot as fuck.”

My eyes snap to his. “Watch it.” That’s when I realize he’s all shit-eating grins.

“You either tell me who she is or I keep making comments about her to make your blood boil,” he says.

“That”—I tip my head toward Cassie and glare in her direction—“is Nora’s wedding planner.”

“And?” Charlie urges.

“And she drives me mad. She’s all fucking sunshine and smiles. I wouldn’t be surprised if she shits rainbows.” I gulp down my drink, the burn a welcome feeling.

“Ah, now I get it,” he says, chuckling.

“Get what?” I ask but don’t at all want to know what he’s thinking.

“She gets under your skin because you’re a grumpy asshole. She probably pushes all your buttons too. I’ll go even further and bet you another drink that she drives you just crazy enough that you want to see if she tastes like sunshine too.”

His cocky face is just begging to be punched, but he isn’t wrong. I down the rest of my drink before forcefully placing it on the table. Charlie laughs.

“You should send her a drink.” He looks up at the balcony.

“She’s clearly on a date,” I mutter, looking for our server. I need another drink.

“Interesting you assume that. Could be a business thing. Or a friend.”

“I don’t really care.” I wonder if it would be easier to just walk over to the bar and order another drink.

He leans back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Oh, you care. It’s why you’re so pissed off right now.”

I shake my head.

“Buy her a drink.” He urges again.

“No,” I spit. But I risk another glance and damn, she looks bored as shit. I want to know who that guy is. Is it a date? If it is, she can do better.
