“Ruth.” I nearly groan.

“I would love to set up a date for you. Please, something casual.” Hope shines in her eyes and I hate disappointing her. But my thoughts wander to Theo, and while I don’t know if we have a future, I’m not ready to let that go just yet.

I start to shake my head, but Ruth jumps back in before I can speak. “If it’s because of that boring man you’ve been seeing, my goodness, you’re wasting your time with that limp noddle.“

I snort at the term. “No, actually, I’m going to end things with him.”

Her brow lifts, intrigued. “Oh, thank goodness. When do you plan on doing that? Soon, I hope.”

“Ah, well, I would like to end things soon, hopefully this week. He’s not always easy to pin down which is why we don’t see each other often.” I tell her.

And I’m relieved she didn’t ask questions as to why I’m ending things to begin with. The last thing I want is to give this woman a single hint of sexy Theo vibes.

“You’re just not that into him, I get it. Good for you for not taking the easy way out and breaking it off via text.” She pats me on the shoulder as I turn to head to my office. “My offer still stands. I don’t think this match is going anywhere. Say the word and I’ll set it up, dear.”

I chuckle. The woman is relentless. “Thanks, Ruth. I’ll let you know.”

If things with Theo don’t pan out, I may finally take her up on her offer.

Chapter 10

WHOA THERE, BUCKO

THEO

“Please don’t hate me, Teddy.”My sister’s voice tumbles out of my phone. I have her on speakerphone.

“What now?” I groan. It’s not the first time she’s started a conversation with those exact words. I hit send on the email I was replying to when she called.

“Am I on speakerphone?”

“Yes.” I’m in back-to-back meetings this afternoon, so I’m trying to catch a few moments of quiet in my office while I can.

“Are we alone?” she whispers.

Fuck. She’s a pain in the ass. “I wouldn’t want anyone hearing you call me Teddy.” I rub my forehead.

“Okay, just checking.”

I shake my head. “What do you need to tell me? I have a meeting in five minutes.”

“Right, of course you do, big brother. I have a dinner meeting with Cassie tonight. She wants to go over the menu and some options the venue has that we need to figure out.” She rushes out.

At the mention of her name, visions of Cassie naked in her bed take over my headspace. I close my eyes. I had Cassie a week ago and I’m not going to lie and say that I haven’t thought about the woman and that our night together hasn’t taken up residency in my brain this past week.

“But I have to cancel. I just got assigned a shift tonight that I need to take. Can you please meet with her?” Her tone is hopeful.

“How does this make sense, Nora? This isn’t my wedding. I’m not the decision maker.” I sigh. Damn it, she’s trying to rope me into being involved in this wedding.

“So the menu options are all based on what I already wanted and I know I’ll be happy with whatever the library options fit the budget. So you look them over and then pick what works.”

I sigh. I’m not doing this.

“Please, Theo. Pretty please, pretty please with a cherry on top.” She whines into the phone.

“I hate that voice,” I mutter.

“I know. It comes standard on all little sister models,” she says, using that same pouty tone.
