I realize now is not the time to engage in sex texts, so I redirect the conversation.

Nora called. I guess we are meeting tonight.

Such a hardship

Seeing you was an easy sell. Handling wedding stuff needed some sweet talking.

What time was your meeting with my sister?

We were doing dinner at 7.

Change of plans. Meet me at 7:30?

Then I follow up that text with my address. I don’t mention that it’s my place. She can figure that out on her own. She doesn’t respond right away and the marketing team hustles in and starts the meeting. I don’t pocket my phone until a few minutes later, after her reply comes in.

I’ll be there.

Happy with the exchange, I pocket my phone. Suddenly looking forward to heading home tonight. Someone clears their throat. I look up and see several people staring at me.

I raise my brow in question. Everyone just rushes to get back to the meeting. What the fuck was that all about? Just then, a bottle of water is set down in front of me.

A marketing assistant, I think her name is Tonya, whispers, “You were grinning like a fool on Christmas. No one is used to seeing you smile. It caught them off guard.”

I eyeball her, and she winks at me.

“I smile.” Under my breath, I mumble.

“Nope on a rope, my friend,” she replies. And she drops a few extra bottles of water in front of some of the other executives and then takes a seat on the chair against the wall.

I didn’t realize I was smiling.

I didn’t realize my lack of smiling threw people off so much.

But I’m one hundred percent aware that being around Cassie makes me feel… less grumpy. Although I have the constant desire to challenge the sexy as fuck woman, I enjoy being in her presence.

Dammit, Cassie.

I let Waffle out into the backyard as I grumble down at my watch, checking it for the fourth time since walking into the house five minutes ago. Sparring with Cassie tonight, in whatever verbal collision we find ourselves in, is going to be hot as fuck and I’ve been looking forward to it since we texted this afternoon.

Then my doorbell rings seconds later. Moving toward the front of the house, I realize I’m feeling unsettled at the fact that she’s here.

I don’t remember the last time I had a woman who was not my sister in my home. My past hookups didn’t get invited back here. It’s always their place, never mine. The decision to have Cassie come here was nearly instant.

I take in a deep breath before letting her in, reminding myself this is my place. I actually like this woman, and she’s here for a specific reason.

Yeah, you want to fuck her again, you jackass.

Shaking that thought out of my head, I swing the door open. My greeting lodges in my throat, momentarily stunned by the woman standing on my porch. Her blond locks fall in rolling waves over one shoulder, her go-to style. My mouth waters at the sight of the column of her exposed, smooth neck. The memory of what she tastes like when I drag my tongue from her collarbone to her ear.

“Theo?” Her voice jolts me from my thoughts.

“Cassie, come in.” I motion into my house. If I were a gentleman, I would make room for her to pass, but I’m not and as she enters my house, she has to shift slightly, and her shoulder brushes my chest as she walks past. Her delicious scent of sunshine and fruitiness fills my nostrils and it’s then I realize it’s going to take everything in me not to take her to my bed.

“Did you just get home?” she asks as she takes in the dark house.
