“Whoops, my bad.” She shrugs and looks at her watch dramatically. “You’re on the clock. And Go. Wait. First, I’ve been dying to know, how’s Cashanova doing? Settled in? How are the Renegades treating him?”

“He’s good. He has an apartment over in Zionsville, and from what I’ve heard, he’s really loving the team and coaching staff. I went over and helped him unpack when he first got here, but I haven’t seen him since.”

“You should have him meet you for lunch. That way I can get my eyes on him. It’s been years.” She sighs dreamily.

“He’s always had a crush on you, Lay. If you’re into him, go for it,” I tell her. Cash is a good guy. I thought that maybe being a pro baller would go to his head, but he’s so focused on the game and working his way to starter, that he never became a player off the field. Don’t get me wrong, I know my little bro has never struggled in the lady department, but steady girlfriends have always been his style.

She shakes her head. “No, not going there. He’s a hottie with a sexy as fuck body,”

“Gross,” I gripe nauseatingly.

“But he’s too much like a brother. Plus, I’m not really into the famous lifestyle. I’ve matched enough over the years to know that dating a pro athlete isn’t my thing. I just like teasing him.”

“Hmm. Okay,” I say.

“And your parents?” She sticks her straw in her mouth, a playful grin on her face. I glare.

“Way to sneak that in there.”

She lazily lifts then drops her shoulder.

“I haven’t actually seen them yet.”

Layla gasps. “Cassie. They’re your parents.”

“I know, but I’ve been busy. Also, you scheduled a meeting with me to catch up. If Mom wanted to see me that bad, she could do the same,” I tell her with a bit more bite than intended.

She reaches over and squeezes my hand. “I know she gets under your skin. But maybe look at this whole thing for what it is. Your whole family is back together and you have an opportunity to reconnect.”

I let out a breath slowly.

“You can do it on your terms. Set some healthy boundaries. I think this is going to be a really good thing for you, Cassie.”

I squeeze her hand back before she pulls away.

She doesn’t wait even a second before jumping into her next prepared topic.

“So Ruth seems to think she’s found the perfect match for you. She’s asked me to do some recon, her words, not mine, on how open you are to finally letting her match you,” Layla says like she didn’t just drop the fact that I’ve been the topic of their conversations.

“I’m still kind of seeing Alan, you know, casually.” It’s a lame excuse and we both know it as I say it. Because we both know Alan’s and my relationship isn’t going anywhere.

“Honestly, I haven’t figured out why you two haven’t made things official. It’s been months,” Layla questions. She’s not wrong.

“Actually. I need to talk to you about something.”

Layla tilts her head to the side. “Oh, did you and Alan finally start bumping uglies?”

My nose wrinkles. “No.”

Her face drops and she mutters a “darn it.”

“Well, not with Alan,” I add sheepishly.

Her eyes widen and she wiggles in her seat with excitement. “Oh my goodness. You didn’t tell me you were dating someone new. Spill the tea, please.” Leaning over, she sets her nearly empty cup on the table.

I sigh. “Okay, so don’t be mad at me.”

“Why on earth would I be mad at you for partaking in the horizontal tango?” she asks.
