“That you and Cassie are a perfect match.” She smiles knowingly. I mull this over.

She stands quietly beside me as I try to catch up.

“This has all been very enlightening, but I’m not sure why you are telling me this. I fucked everything up with Cassie. Pardon my words, but unfortunately it’s too late.”

She reaches over and places her hand on my forearm. “Oh, my boy, nothing is ever too late if it’s your soul mate.”

Looking away from the woman who’s just turned my world on its axis, my gaze lands on Cassie. She’s chatting with someone near the cake table. My body longs to move toward her. I want to wrap her in my arms and kiss her. To breathe her in and make her all the promises.

“I can help you win her back, Theo.”

I can’t take my eyes off her. “How?” My question is filled with hope.

“Let me take the lead on this. All you have to do is show up when and where I tell you. Then, give her the best damn apology you’ve got. You’ll tell her you’ll move past your hang-ups just for a chance to live the rest of your life with her. That you’ll do whatever it takes to show her you will love her forever and never leave her. Can you do that, Theo?”

I blink as Cassie is on the move. I look down at Ruth and gone is her grin, in its place a grave expression.

“Yeah. I can do that.” My voice is barely above a whisper.

“Will you mean it?”

Blood rushes in my ears this moment, when I realize the way I’ve been living is no longer a valid way to live. I don’t have to be a lonely asshole anymore.

“With all my heart.”

Lightness fills her eyes and she smiles wide. “Very well. I’ll be in touch.”

She lifts her drink in way of thanks and starts to walk away.

“Do you need my number?” I ask.

“Already have it.” She taps her temple and winks.

What an interesting woman. I watch her walk away just as I hear Charlie bellow my name. The edges of my mouth twitch as I think about how my life is going to be filled with sunshine.

Charlie stops in front of me. “Oh shit. You’re smiling, man.”

Chapter 18

GOT ANY FROZEN PIZZA?

CASSIE

The couch groansas I throw myself into it. Covering my face with my arm, I sigh and close my eyes. Normally, after a wedding, I head home since it’s typically a late night. But tonight I needed a minute. I know there isn’t anyone at the office at nearly midnight, but I didn’t want to go home to a quiet house.

Being in a quiet office isn’t much better. If I were more carefree, I would have headed out to a bar, but that would have led to drinking alone, something I’ve never been a fan of. Unless you count a glass of wine and a good binge session. Hard liquor out in public? Nope on a rope.

“The young woman sighs dramatically as she wallows in her sadness, alone in her office, late on a Sunday night.”

A shriek falls from my mouth as I jump to a sitting position. Ruth walks into my office with her knowing smirk. She always looks as if she knows something I don’t and it’s both eerily obnoxious and intriguing at the same time.

“What are you doing here?” I ask. I know she was at the Anderson wedding. Why she is there, I don’t know. She chatted with Nora several times, so I’m willing to bet Nora invited her, which is fine. Ruth has a knack for showing up unexpectedly. Like now.

“Oh, just had some last-minute work to finish.” She takes a seat in the coordinating wingback chair to the left of my couch.

“Hmm.” I narrow my eyes, not believing her for a minute.

“And I could ask the same of you.” She chuckles.
