“I've had one of my guys keeping an eye on the compound for some time now and he said he would let us know if anything changes or if they decided to move her.”

“Good. Thank you.”

I dozed off for a short time on the drive to the safe house, but my mind raced with plans, what ifs, and thoughts of Mia. I just wanted her back and I doubted that I would rest easily until I could finally rest with her in my arms. Even so there was something about traveling that always seemed to make me tired and my eyes drooped heavily. La Guerriglia glanced over at me with a concerned look, but he didn't say a word.

“What is it?” I asked dryly.

“I didn't say anything,” he answered, turning his eyes back to the road.

“What you're not saying isveryloud. You've always been frank with me and it's a trait that I've come to admire so don't stop now. What do you have to say?”

“When was the last time that you slept?”

“I dozed off for about an hour on the ship.”

“And before that?” He raised his brow and studied my expression as I thought back.

“Maybe two hours the night before last.”

“You can't go on such little sleep. You need to rest.”

“I'll rest once Mia is returned to me.”

“If you don't rest before then, you could make mistakes. The most dangerous thing on the field is a tired man.”

“I just want Mia back safe. I'm not willing to sleep until I know that she's safely back in my arms. God knows what that monster is doing to her.”

“And I understand that, but if you want to maximize our chances of getting her back, unharmed, then you need to be at your best. We are already going in outnumbered, outgunned, and with them having the home advantage.”

“What do you suggest I do? Sleep cozied up on a soft mattress while Mia's most likely being tortured, held against her will, forced to—”

“You can't think like that. You should be resting so that you can think clearly and get her back safely. Sleeping isn't selfish, Matteo. It's necessary.”

“I don’t think I can.”

“It will be daylight soon after we get to the safe house. I think our best bet is to get some shut eye, make a plan, then strike tomorrow night when we’ll have the dark on our side. It will be easier to ambush them.”

“You want me to wait an entire day to get Mia back while on the same island as her?”

“I want you to think about this and act smart.”

“I trust your battle plans and your military training to help us infiltrate their compound as you did with getting us into their country, but you don't know Mia. Andrea will punish her for escaping before. It’s easy for you to say that we should wait. You don't care for her the way I do. I can't bear the thought of her spending one more moment with him.”

“Do you know why surgeons don't cut on their own family members? Even if they are the best in their field.”

“Because they're too emotionally involved,” I answered.

“Exactly. With Mia, you're too emotionally involved to make the right decision. I know you want to get her back, but you don't want her to get caught in the crossfire, do you? You don't want her to end up dead or injured.”

“No. I don’t want that.”

“Good. Then it’s settled.”
