"If that's true, then we need to get out of Corsica and back into your territory quickly." Abigail looked nervous.

"Why? What do you know?"

"One night when I was...entertainingSignoreRomano, I overheard him on the phone. He was talking to some Corsican don about helping him take you down. He has more people on his side here than he does in Italy "

"Then let us help you. We can get your daughter and bring both of you with us back to Italy."

Abigail hesitated, looking from me to Mia before nodding. "Okay, but I go to get my daughter with Mia. No one else."

"Like hell—" I started but Mia interrupted.

"Teo."

"You aren't going somewhere with some woman you barely know when we are in enemy territory. It's not happening. I let you come back to talk to her, but this is where I draw the line."

"Okay, what if the men stay out of sight? Just in case we get into trouble."

Abigail nodded hesitantly, finally giving in. "Okay. Maria is being kept in a small cottage not far from here. An older widow takes care of her but she's afraid of Andrea too so she will only help if I can convince her that he's really dead."

I turned to Alessandro. "Have one of the men text me a photo of Andrea's body. That should be enough to get the widow to trust us. Then have everyone clear out and get to the safe houses. I don't trust that the Corsicans won't come looking for us here."

"You got it."

"I'm going to take Luca with me. Get the rest of the men out as soon as possible." I turned from Alessandro to Mia. "Let's go. We don't have time to waste."

We pulled up to a smallcottage out of the way. The house was in good shape, but the yard hadn't been tended to in a while. For Abigail and her daughter to have such a set routine that her daughter had a caretaker in Corsica, meant that Andrea had more of a hold there than I had originally thought. That knowledge made me want to get Mia out of there even faster. Nothing seemed to be what I thought it was and even though Andrea was dead he still had his father and two brothers that I would eventually have to deal with.

Killing the heir to the Romano crime family would not be without consequence and knowing that they had the Corsicans on their side meant that it was going to be more of a challenge than I had originally anticipated. All I wanted was to find Abigail's daughter and get Mia out of Corsica and back to our city as quickly as possible. There, at least I had more control.

I climbed out of the driver's seat and Luca out of the back, and we both rounded the car to open the girls’ doors. We had taken one of the SUVs since the sports car had no room for the extra passengers.

Abigail eagerly headed toward the door, but I grabbed Mia's hand and pulled her back gently for a moment.
