“Well, he’s got the girl waiting for you in the living room, right off the entryway.”

“Good, thank you.” I placed my hand on the small of Mia’s back and began leading her up the steps when my phone chimed with an incoming message.

+39 06 373 8001: I need to see you. It’s urgent.

I didn’t recognize the number, but I hesitated at the bottom of the stairs to reply.

Matteo: Who is this?

+39 06 373 8001: Anna. Please, meet me. We need to talk. In person.

Mia stopped at the top of the stairs and looked back at me with a mix of curiosity and concern. "Everything okay?"

I sent a quick, one-handed text back without looking at my phone.

Matteo: I think you have the wrong number.

I set my phone to vibrate as I slipped it into my pocket. The text was strange, but I had to put that out of my mind and focus on getting Mia in and out of that house and that God forsaken island as soon as possible.

I forced a smile and hurried up the steps. "Everything's good."

My phone buzzed with another incoming message that I ignored. I ushered Mia into the house where two of Alessandro's men stood in the entryway.

"Where’s Alessandro?"

"In there. With the girl." One of the men standing guard pointed me in the direction of the living room.

"Thanks. Come on. The sooner we get this taken care of, the sooner we can get you out of here and to somewhere safe." I hurried Mia into the living room where Alessandro and the girl I assumed was Abigail sat across from each other on stuffy old chairs that looked like whoever had bought them was trying way too hard to be prestigious.

Abigail stood up excitedly when she spotted Mia.

"You really came."

"Of course, I did." Mia hurried over to Abigail. "I'm so glad that you are safe. I was worried about you with all the fighting."

"I wouldn't say that I'm exactly safe. I'm surrounded by a bunch of strange men with guns." Abigail gave me a distrusting glance, but Mia got her attention back on her.

"But you trust me, right?"

"Si. You sacrificed yourself for my daughter and me."

"Good. Then trust me when I say that you can trust Teo and his men."

"How do you know?"

"Teo is my fiancé. He came here to rescue me from Andrea. HekilledAndrea."

Abigail's eyes widened as she looked up at me in surprise. "This is true? You killedSignoreRomano?"

"I did. And my men have either captured or killed all his men on the property. You are safe now," I assured her.

Abigail slowly shook her head, looking less elated than I would have expected from finding out that her tormentor was dead. "Andrea was just the tip of the iceberg. He has a lot of connections in Corsica and Italy. None of us are safe."

"I'll admit I don't have as many connections as I'd like in Corsica but in Italy? I have the power, or Mia and my family do."

"You?" Abigail looked at Mia doubtfully, but Mia nodded.

"I am donna of the Monticelli family, and this is Matteo Venturi, future don to the Venturi family."
