"Alright, I'm ready to get this over with."

"I'm sorry, sir. The father—"

"Alleged father," I corrected him. I wasn't sure why I'd felt the need to clarify that I might not be the father, but I did.

He nodded nervously. "Theallegedfather just needs a simple cheek swab."

"Oh." I rolled my sleeve back down, feeling slightly embarrassed at my lack of knowledge on the subject.

"If you'll just open wide..."

I did as he asked, and he quickly collected the sample.

"All done."

"Good. Thank you. How long does it take to get the results in?"

"Probably Monday."

“That's unacceptable. I'm getting married the day after tomorrow."

"I can...put a rush on it but the earliest it will be is mid-day tomorrow."

"Okay. Alessandro, have one of your men posted with him until we get the test results in. I'm the only one to find out the results. And have another man keep an eye on Anna to make sure she doesn't disappear on us before we find out the truth."

"Si, Signore."

"I do not need one of your goons leering at me all night," Anna huffed.

"No. But I do."

"All this stress isn't healthy for the baby.Yourbaby."

"As far as the stress, you brought that on yourself when you contacted me. If you are telling the truth then you have nothing to be worried about. As for the latter, whether or not that baby is mine has yet to be determined."

"I—" I didn't let Anna continue. Until I had answers about the paternity of her baby there was nothing I wanted to hear from her. There'd be plenty to talk about once the test results were in one way or the other. I turned to Alessandro. “You got this?”

“Yeah. We'll take care of it all.”

I gave him a confirming nod before turning away and walking out the door. I made it out to my car, planning to go back to the hotel and hide away for the rest of the night. We'd ended earlier than expected but I couldn’t be around Mia until I knew the truth. There would be no way that I could keep this from her if I was around her and I didn't want to worry her about something that might be nothing at all.

I climbed in my car and revved the engine as I pulled out of the parking lot and headed to The Blue Sapphire. I couldn't risk running into Mia or someone else from the wedding party, but I needed a drink, and it was somewhere that no one would know me. I could drink alone, surrounded by people. I didn't feel like sitting alone in my hotel, but I didn't feel like talking either.

There were a few more patrons than when I had been there before. Since I didn't need the privacy of a table, I took a seat at the bar and waved for the bartender to bring me a drink.

I finished my second drink and signaled the bartender to bring me a third when a knockout walked up to the bar and took a seat next to me.

"Sauvignon Blanc,s'il vous plaît."I glanced over to her, and she offered a soft smile.

I tipped my head and lifted my glass before taking a drink, losing myself in my thoughts again the moment I turned my gaze from her.

"Are you here for business or pleasure?" Her sultry tone jarred me from my thoughts.

"Excuse me?"

"Business or pleasure? Or maybe a bit of both?" She practically purred as she leaned a little closer to me and took another sip from her wine glass.

"A wedding actually," I stated bluntly. I had no interest in carrying on a conversation with some random woman at the bar but there was no reason to be rude either.
