I pulled out my phone as I made a beeline for my rental car.

"Ciao,Teo," Alessandro answered quickly.

"Has everything been arranged?

"Si. The lab technician had already gone home for the night, but we were able to persuade him to come back to the lab."

"And the girl? Has she given you any trouble?”

“She wasn't thrilled. She wanted to go home for the night. Said this could wait till tomorrow but I impressed upon her the importance of her complying with your wishes.”

“Good. I'll be there in fifteen. Tell the lab tech to get everything ready. I want this thing done as soon as I get there and give my sample.” I hurried my footsteps, nearly running the short distance left to my car. My phone was already on the key fob and hit the unlock button before I was within reach of my door.

“You got it. The actual test doesn't take that long to come through. Especially with a lab tech as motivated as ours.”

“Good. Because I don't have any time to waste. I want to be standing at that altar, watching Mia walk down the aisle with a clear head and a clear conscience, knowing that that isn't my baby.”

There was a hesitation on the other end of the line, and I could tell that Alessandra wanted to say something, but he was holding back. “Go ahead Alex. What are you wanting to say?”

“You said she had a picture. Is there any chance..?”

“That night was a blur. I remember waking up the next morning with the worst hangover I've ever had but I could have sworn that I only had two drinks. I never liked to cut loose when I was with Gio.”

“I know. You said you didn't trust him enough.”

“I had the smallest suspicion that my drink had been drugged but I had no way of proving it. The only person that was close to my drink was the bartender and Gio. I had no real reason to think that he would drug me.”

“He was always complaining that you needed to loosen up. Maybe he took it into his own hands.”

I let out a heavy sigh. “In any case, I guess there is a chance. Especially if I was drugged.”

“Well, let’s just hope that one night wasn't enough to do any permanent damage.”

“Yeah. I'm not sure how Mia would handle a complication like that. I'll just be glad once all this is over.”

“I'll get things started on my end. Come through the side entrance when you get here. The door will be unlocked.”

“I'm already on my way so I should be there soon.”

The fifteen-minute drive only took ten. I was eager to get the whole ordeal out of the way. I parked my car around back next to Alessandro's rental and entered through the side door.

The building wasn't large and entering from the side put me in some kind of storage area, but I easily followed the agitated voices to the adjacent room that opened up into an ultra-modern lab.

"Ciao,"I said firmly as I looked over to Anna arguing with Alessandro. "What's the problem here?"

"The problem is that I don't like needles. You can't force me to get this done."

I narrowed my eyes at her and took the three strides to where she was standing with her arms crossed, pouting like a spoiled child. I towered over her, but I didn’t let her small frame deter me from using the intimidatingly cold tone I usually reserved for my enemies. "You were the one who contacted me, remember?"

Anna opened her mouth to argue but I didn't let her. "You are the one demanding that I believe that I'm the father of this child even though I have no memory of being with you."

"This babyisyours."

"Then sit down, shut up, and let this nice technician take your blood. He's already working after hours which...” I turned my attention to the wide-eyed lab technician dressed in scrubs and a white lab coat. “I will be paying you triple your usual rate."

He gave me an appreciative nod and Anna reluctantly sat to have her blood taken.

Once he was done with Anna, I removed my coat and sat in the seat on the other side of his metal tray. I unbuttoned my cuff and began rolling up my sleeve, but the technician looked at me curiously.
