“All right. Feel better soon.” And with that she slipped out of the room. After a couple of crackers, the nausea seemed to dwindle and after a few more, it was nearly gone. By the time Arman came back into the room, I felt almost back to normal.

“Hey. How are you feeling?”

“A lot better, actually. The ginger ale and crackers really seem to do the trick.”

“Good. I'm glad.” Arman shut the door and came closer. “Well,” he hesitated. “I have some good news and some news I'm not sure about yet.”

“Okay let's start with the good news, then.”.

“The good news is that you don't have food poisoning, a parasite, or stomach virus.”

“Is it an ulcer? I just don't know what would cause all this, but I have been under a whole lot of stress lately.”

“It's not an ulcer.”

“Then what is it?”

“Mia, you're pregnant.” Arman’s words echoed in my head for a moment as I tried to process what he was saying. I wasn't sick. I was pregnant.

“Pregnant? Are you sure?”

“I'm pretty sure.”

“That's crazy. I can't be pregnant.”

“Have you had unprotected sex in the last couple of months?”

“Well, yeah but not often. We usually use protection.”

“Contraception is only as effective as the person taking it or using it. If you don't use it then it can't work.”

“Pregnant...” I repeated the word as I let it sink in and let the true meaning of what he was saying register. I was going to have a baby. Teo and I were going to have a baby. I remembered how upset he had been when he thought that Anna was pregnant with his child. He had been relieved that it wasn't his.

How will he feel when this one is?The nausea returned, that time from nerves more than from anything else.

“Mia? Are you okay? You're looking a little pale.

“I feel a little faint.”

“Here lie back.” Arman rushed over and helped lie me on the exam table before hurrying to the sink and wetting a couple of paper towels to put on my forehead.

Once I started to feel a little better, he helped me back up. “So, I take it this isn't good news? I thought you always wanted children.” Arman sat on the side of the exam table and took my hand in his in a show of support.

“I did—I do. I'm just not sure that Teo does."

"Why wouldn't he?

"Something came up not so long ago that gave me a pretty good idea at how he would react if he found out I was pregnant "

"I see. Well, the fact is that youarepregnant. So, I guess the only thing to do now is to talk to him about it."

"I can't. Not right now. We're about to leave on our honeymoon. I can't bear to ruin that for us. Besides, if he doesn't take it well, I may need some space, and I won't be able to do that alone with him in Paris.”

"You have to do what you think is best but from what I've seen, it's always better to get things out in the open instead of holding them in."

"I'm going to tell him. It's not really something I can keep secret for too long."

"That's true."
