“Is something wrong,Bellissima?”

“No, of course not.” Mia smiled at me, but it was weaker than usual.

“Are you sure? You don't seem like everything's okay. You don't look like an excited bride ready to go on her honeymoon.”

“I'm just tired. Someone kept me awake all night and I had to leave early for my errands and lunch with the girls.”

Tired. Of course, she was tired. I'd kept her up until the sun was already starting to peek over the horizon. “I'm sorry, my love. I promise I'll make sure that you get at least a little bit of sleep on this trip.” I smirked at her and pulled her close, gently tipping her chin up so that my lips could find hers. “I've already brought your suitcase and toiletry bag down, along with mine. Is there anything else that you needed?”

“No. I believe that's all.”

“Good. Then I thought we should have an afternoon snack on the patio before we leave.”

“That sounds nice.”

I led Mia out to the patio where Bianca and Lucia were finishing preparing an antipasto spread along with Mia's favorite wine as a special treat before our flight.

“This looks wonderful. Thank you so much.” I pulled out Mia's chair and she took a seat before I found mine.

“I had them bring some of your favorite wine from the vineyard.” Mia looked hesitant at the bottle and smiled.

Something was definitely off but I couldn't place it and I hated not being able to figure out what was going on, but I hated it more that she wasn't confiding in me. “Do you not like this one anymore?”

“I do. It's just with being so tired I'm afraid if I have any wine, I may not be able to stay awake through the flight.

“You can always nap on the plane. It's one of the benefits of a private jet.”

“I know, but I don't want to miss a moment of this honeymoon with you, not even the flight over.”

“Okay. We will stick with water tonight.”

“Thank you. But please, you can have some wine if you want.”

“We will save this bottle for later.” I smiled at her while studying her expression, trying to figure out what exactly was going on with her.

We ate our antipasto, but I was concerned. Mia lacked her usual appetite, and she was quieter than usual.

“Will you excuse me for a moment? I need to use thebagno.”

“Of course.”

I excused myself, walking into the house and immediately called Armando. I figured that if I was going to ask a question about Mia, he would be the one to ask. He answered after the third ring.

“Hello?”

“Armando, it's Matteo.”

“Matteo, it's good to hear from you. Is everything all right? Is Mia okay?”

“I don't know. She’s not acting right. She's pale and looks extremely tired.”

“Have you asked her how she’s feeling?”

“She said she's fine, but something seems off.”

“Mia has been through a lot in the past few months. Everything from losing her father to being kidnapped twice. We still don't know the full extent of what Romano did to her during the time he had her in Corsica. She's going to take some time to heal emotionally and physically from everything that she's been through. I'm sure that's all it is but you should talk to her. Be patient with her. I'm sure Mia will open up to you if you make her feel safe.”

“Make her feel safe? Miaissafe with me. I would protect her with my life,” I said with some defensiveness in my tone.
