At five o'clock, we had dinner in the main dining hall but after talking for another half an hour, my father’s condition began to worsen as he got tired. He usually took a nap in the afternoon but had skipped it to spend time with me. Though I hated to leave him, I needed to let him rest.

“Well, Papa, we should go let you get some rest but we’re going to come back tomorrow, alright?”

“Okay, angioletto. You two have fun. And you, young man...” My father turned to Alessandro with a stern expression. “She’s my only daughter. You treat her right, understand?”

I glanced at Alessandro nervously, but he just nodded to my father and offered him his hand. “Yes, sir.”

As soon as we were out of the nursing facility, I let out a breath but as we got to the car, Alessandro spun me to face him, placing both hands on the car door, pinning me between it and him.

I gasped. “Alessandro, what the hell?”

“Who is he?” His voice was a fierce growl and my heart picked up its pace.

“Who’s who? My dad?” I searched his face for answers.

He sighed impatiently like I was being purposefully obtuse. “No, Sienna. The man who laid his hands on you.”

All the blood drained from my face, and I felt lightheaded at his blatant question and the intense anger in his eyes. My head swayed and I took a deep breath to try to regain my wits, but it was nearly impossible with Alessandro so close.

“I...” I couldn’t look at him, instead finding a spot on the ground to focus on.

“Give me his name, Sienna.”

I took a deep breath and braced myself as I met his gaze. “Why does it matter?”

“Because no man should put his hands on a woman like that, especially a woman like you.”

I blinked and pulled my head back in surprise. “A woman like me?”

Alessandro growled and pushed off the car, giving me the distance to breathe. “Yes, a woman like you. You are smart, talented, kind, and brave. Why the hell would you put up with some guy hitting you?”

“I was young. It didn’t start off that way. At first he was sweet and romantic. I thought I was in love...”

Alessandro stalked closer again and I flinched as he reached me. He slowed his movements when he saw my reaction, gently lifting his hand to cup my cheek. His thumb softly brushed over my cheek as his expression softened.

“I need a name, micetta.” His voice was low and gentle and for the first time, I didn’t mind him calling memicettaall that much.

I shook my head. “Why do you need it?”

“Because,” he hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “I need to know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Alessandro’s features hardened again, and his voice reached a terrifying depth. “Because any man who hits you doesn’t deserve to continue to draw breath and I'm going to express my feelings on the matter.”

It felt like we were suddenly in a vacuum with no oxygen left in the air. “Alessandro, you can’t.”

“Oh, I assure you that I can. And I will find out his name one way or another.”

“Alex, please? There’s no need for all that.”

He looked at me as if giving me one last chance to tell him, but I kept my lips pressed tight in a disapproving thin line. He lifted his brow and when I didn’t relent, he shrugged, as if accepting some unspoken challenge before pulling out his phone and dialing a number.

“Hey, Marco...I’m good. I need a favor...I need you to find out every guy that Sienna dated in the past...yes, every one of them. Let’s start with the most recent and run it backward. Look for anyone with a history of violence, especially any sort of domestic abuse...Thanks.”

He hung up the phone with a smug expression and I panicked.

“What...what did he say?”
