I nodded.

"I'm Sienna, by the way."

"Don't."

"Don't what?" I looked up from his arm, puzzled.

"Don't pull that‘how to survive being abducted’shit on me."

"What are you talking about?"

"They say to tell your captor your name, information about yourself to make them see you as a person. It won't work. You save him, you save yourself. Nothing else you say or do matters."

"And if I can't save him?" I asked the question I wasn't sure I wanted answered.

"Then things get a little more complicated."

And that was that. I swallowed hard, giving a sharp nod because I had no idea what to say to that. I just needed to get back to work. I carefully slipped the needle into a small artery on the inside of his arm, and he winced.

"Arteries hurt worse than veins but it's the best way to do the transfusion. I guess I should have warned you."

"It's fine."

"So, are you going to tell me your name?"

"Alessandro,” he begrudgingly answered.

I gave a satisfied nod, taped off the IV and stepped back. "There."

I watched as the blood ran through the line to the man on the table.

I stepped over to the tray of supplies I'd gathered and quickly picked up a scalpel. Alessandro jumped up from the chair and grabbed my wrist firmly, but I didn't drop my instrument.

“What are you doing with that?” He barked, looking at me suspiciously.

“I need to make the opening a little bigger so that I can find the bullet and get it out. Then, I can focus on repairing the damage, stopping the bleeding, and saving his life.”

He released my wrist, and I yanked it away.

"Now sit down before you pull out your line or pass out on me."

He let out a low growl that made me want to quiver in fear, but I couldn't let him get to me. I turned back to my patient with the scalpel in hand. I had surgery to do, and the stakes had never been higher.

Chapter 3

Alessandro

I watched every move Sienna made as she meticulously sewed up the bullet hole in Luca's shoulder. She may have been a surgeon and claimed to abide by their oath, but I'd held her at gunpoint to force her into saving my friend. I didn't trust her not to try something stupid and I refused to put Luca at risk.

"There. Done," Sienna said with a sigh of relief as she stepped back and wiped her brow with her arm. I perked up in my seat.

"It's done? He's going to be okay?"

"It's still touch and go for now, but the worst should be over. Now we just have to wait and see." She tossed the bloody gauze, clothes, and gloves in the trash before heading to the sink to wash her hands.

"How long before we can move him?"

"He'll need at least a day before he can be transferred but he's going to need medical supervision pretty constantly for a week and that's without any complications. Your friend really needs to be in a hospital."
