"No. No hospitals. You'll keep an eye on him for the next few hours, then we'll take him home where our doctor can look after him."

Sienna dried her hands and slumped down into the chair next to mine, looking exhausted. "How far away is home?"

I raised an eyebrow, wondering if she was digging for information or if she was really that naive.

"I'm just wondering how far he’ll have to travel. He won't survive a long trip without medical care."

“Why do you care?”

“What?” Her back straightened and she looked as though I’d just slapped her.

“Why do you care? I said that you had to keep him alive to save yourself but why do you care once we’re gone?”

Her brow scrunched with a scowl. “I care about all my patients.”

“It didn’t sound like it earlier.” She looked confused so I clarified. “At the hospital, you were arguing with that nurse about saving a patient.”

“Oh, no. We weren’t arguing about a patient. We were arguing about a doctor.”

“A doctor? But you said he wasn’t worth trying to save.”

“I said that it wasn’t worth trying not tolosehim. He’s an arrogant prick with horrible bedside manner. He got a better job offer at another hospital. Alice has had a crush on him for a year and she didn’t want to see him go to another hospital, but I think it’s a good thing that we will be rid of him.”

“Oh.” I blinked, looking at her as if I was seeing her clearly for the first time. “I have to say, I had you pegged completely wrong.”

“So, you thought I was just walking out on a patient like that?”

“It sounded pretty damning.”

“I guess that’s why you shouldn’t assume things about people.” She paused as if wanting to say more and I lifted my brow to encourage her to speak.

“What is it?”

“If you thought that I’d do that to one of my own patients, why would you get me to help your friend?”

“Because I wasn’t going to let you walk out onhim.”

“A fair point. So, if you had known the truth, would that have changed anything? Would you still have taken me if you’d thought I was a good doctor and not some asshole?”

“I still would have taken you. I needed a surgeon and frankly you were the easier target.”

“Easier?”

“Yeah, I saw some big guy in a white coat come out first, but you were a lot easier to grab.”

“Oh, you mean Frank?” She tried to fight back a chuckle.

“What?”

“I saw him walk out a little before me. He’s a pharmacist. If you had taken him, he wouldn’t have done you or your friend much good.”

“I guess it’s a good thing that I grabbed you instead.”

“Yeah, lucky me.” She sighed and leaned back in the chair, and for the first time I noticed the dark circles under her eyes.

“You’re exhausted. I’m assuming you worked a full shift before having to help save Luca.” I glanced at Luca who was still sleeping. “We’re going to be here for a while. I’m going to send the other guys to get some rest. There’s a couch in the waiting room. Why don’t you get some sleep and I’ll keep an eye on him for a while? I can wake you if there’s any change.”

“I don’t think I’d be able to sleep here.”
