Gaylen didn’t seem to have the same issue. “I’m pretty sure we’ve met at least one or two. A few years ago, when we first started meeting other people who were interested in being poly of some sort, we met this couple and they were—”

Tabitha lit up. “That couple with the trunk and he kept—”

Now it was Gaylen’s turn to interrupt excitedly. “Counting her calories and talking about how small she was.”

Okay, they might’ve been serial killers because he’d been weird and looked at us both like we were steaks he was going to throw on the grill… and we hadn’t even been trying to date them. Yes, I was starting to agree with Ender. Tabitha needed someone to watch over her if she’d met the sex toy trunk people.

“They were so weird.” She slouched back in her seat, shaking her head. “I was so glad to see that they weren’t at the party. No one I’ve dated recently was there. It was amazing.”

That was frightening.

No one?

But looking back, we hadn’t seen anyone we’d dated either.

Shoot. Our luck really was as bad as hers.

“What’s wrong?” Tabitha’s questioning tone snapped me back to the moment.

Before I could figure out how to explain that I’d drifted off, Gaylen barked out a laugh. “I think he just realized we didn’t see anyone we’d dated there either. Just some Doms and Daddies that are friends and acquaintances.”

As I nodded sheepishly, Tabitha laughed, her eyes lighting up. “I think that makes me feel better about my luck.”

Still smiling, Gaylen nodded. “Yep, it’s definitely not just you. This town seems to attract crazies. But it really does show you how well they did the screening for the party. I thought the application and questions were a bit ridiculous, but it seems I was wrong about that.”

Tabitha made her eyes go wide and she sucked in a breath. Her over-the-top acting was obvious, so we were trying not to laugh even before she got to the punch line. “A Dom admitting he was wrong? I think we’ve reached the apocalypse.”

Barely managing not to laugh, Gaylen gave her a haughty look. “It only happens once a year, so don’t think it’s a regular occurrence.”

Rolling my eyes had Tabitha trying not to giggle but she was losing the battle. “I’ll write it on my calendar so I know when to expect it next. Taking notes is very important.”

Teasing aside, did that mean she could see herself dating us that long?

Nope. I was not going to even think about asking that. Just because we’d said we were going to be honest and open with her did not mean I was going to be stupid.

“So you can see being with us that long?”

Gaylen was going to be the stupid one.

As I waited for the date to come to a crashing halt, she gave him a thoughtful look, scrunching up her face like one of my students when the answer was right on the tip of their tongue. “Nothing seems to be a red flag yet and Ender couldn’t see any downsides. You’re funny and not weird in a bad way. You don’t give off serial killer vibes and you’re both sexy. So yeah, for the time being I can see a future with you.”

Her list was fascinating and I could see Gaylen’s eyes twinkling with laughter, but he nodded and took the whole thing seriously. “Ender seemed to indicate that we were compatible and your little side bonded with Harper fairly easily. You don’t like slimy foods and you like steak. The only thing I can see being an issue is your feelings on BDSM outside of the age play aspects. Spankings. Toys. Crops. Things like that.”

This was the strangest first date we’d ever had… but maybe that wouldn’t be a bad thing?

Tabitha clearly wasn’t offended. If anything, she liked his honest approach and perked up again. “It’s been a long time since I was tied up and flogged. I’ve never tried a crop, though. But yes, those things don’t bother me as long as you don’t end up being creepy. Ender won’t let anyone tie me up if they seem sketchy and I promised him that he could veto any situation like that.”

As I sighed, Gaylen flashed her a teasing grin and nodded. “I have veto power over pets and shenaniganry. Harper is easily talked into ridiculousness when his students or a sub is involved.”

Tabitha gave me a commiserating frown before reaching over and squeezing my hand. “That’s terrible. I’m sorry.”

At least someone understood my pain.

“Thank you.” We both just ignored Gaylen’s dramatic groan and the way he was shaking his head as he mumbled to himself. “It’s difficult but it makes him happy and that’s what counts.”

That got even more drama from the ridiculous Dom but Tabitha’s barely suppressed grin said she didn’t mind. “I’m glad you’re the type of Daddy who puts others first. That says a lot about you.”

Aww.
