Yes.

Hmm, the way she let out a tiny surprised sound said I probably should’ve given her a heads-up, but since that ship had sailed, I decided to ignore her reaction for now and push right past it.

“We’re gonna get you all pretty and then see what Poppy is up to because he’s being very quiet.” That got a tiny laugh, so I kept going. “Then after breakfast, we’ll play and watch cartoons and pick out toys online that will make Poppy groan.”

And another giggle.

We were making progress.

“Later, we’ll get you cleaned up again and color and have Poppy make us a yummy lunch.” Everything she’d said and some things she’d talked around made it clear she liked diapers. They were just something that hadn’t been part of her little time lately. Which made perfect sense, but even Ender had said that she still had diapers at her house, so I wasn’t too worried.

She was just nervous and that was okay.

Nerves were to be expected with a change like this and I’d have been surprised if she hadn’t reacted. But the fact that she was still little and hadn’t even said no was telling. This was just something she needed me to show her that I was fine with because somehow in our conversations I seemed to have been a bit too vague about it.

“What do you think about big butterflies? I think we could find stickers or something like that to put on the dresser. I’m not sure I can convince Gaylen to learn to paint them. He’s very handy but not terribly artistic.” I, on the other hand, was neither but I was a very good online shopper, so I knew I could figure out something that would work.

“Butterflies, Daddy.” She answered with a nod but her eyes never left the diapers as I grabbed one and finally found the frilly diaper cover that would protect her modesty while she played. I’d clearly overorganized the drawers because that’d taken entirely too long. “Pink.”

Since that seemed to mean the almost panties-like diaper cover, I nodded and set it down beside her on the bed. “It was so pretty and it matched your dress.”

It seemed like looking pretty was more important than worrying about the diaper because, as I leaned her back on the bed, she made an aww-ing kind of sound. “Pretty.”

“That’s right. I even found diapers with little pink bears. They were so cute.” It was hard to argue with that either, so as she tried to decide how she was going to respond, I put my finger up to my lips. “Shh, don’t tell Poppy that I bought the ones with the blocks too. They’re under the bed and he hasn’t seen them yet. He said we only needed one package but that’s silly because you’re going to look so cute and I love taking care of you.”

Shrugging as she smiled, I sighed. “We’re just going to keep it a secret between us. Poppy doesn’t need to know.”

He’d forget what we’d talked about sooner or later and then I’d just say he always knew I was getting both.

That got a giggle out of her and finding me funny seemed to push back her nerves. “Naughty Daddy.”

Pretending to be shocked as she giggled, I dramatically sucked in a breath as I brought the diaper between her legs. “No, Happy Daddy, and maybe, Sneaky Daddy.”

That got more laughter from her and she seemed to have forgotten why she was supposed to be nervous because she lifted her bottom and we quickly got her more covered. “Sneaky Daddy.”

“But don’t tell.” Helping her to sit up, I quickly changed her from the T-shirt to the dress and made a mental note to change her into pajamas before she went to bed next time. I was doing my best to be a really principled Daddy but some things were just too much pressure. “Daddy’s being sneaky.”

“Daddy’s going to be a pain in my ass. What did you buy? I come in here to figure out if green beans were considered too squishy for lunch and I find shenanigans?”

Oops.

Poppy had arrived a bit too soon.

“Chocolate chips for pancakes?” Yes, that was entirely logical and actually honest, so he couldn’t say I was lying. “For some reason, I think I put them with the spices over by the stove.”

Since I needed my partner in crime to sell the idea, I smiled at Tabitha as I slipped on her diaper cover. “Does that sound like fun?”

He scoffed, sending Tabitha into a flood of giggles, and as soon as she was ready, she threw herself off the bed, barely managing not to take me out in the process. “Poppy. Pretty. Pink.”

“I’m not pretty and pink.” His ridiculous answer got even more laughter from her and she twirled around as he looked thoughtful, still playing the game. “Ah,you’repretty and pink. You look very nice, sweet girl.”

“Miss Tabitha is all ready to play and to have breakfast.” It was the truth and a wonderful distraction because she started bouncing and cuddling up against her Poppy. We could figure out the green beans later once it wouldn’t remind him of me doing something slightly shady.

“Cakes. Poppy. Cakes.” Her sneaky giggle had him frowning and looking ridiculously gruff.

“I’m not agreeing to cake. We’re having pancakes.” Pretending to take the whole silly conversation very seriously, he shook his head. “I know how sneaky you are.”

She managed to stop giggling as she shook her head and gave him wide eyes. “Nooo, Poppy.”
