“I can understand both sides, honestly.” I didn’t know what I would’ve done in that situation. “My parents were both only children, so I had very few relatives when they died. I’m starting to think that was easier than what could’ve been going on at the time.”

Daddy barked out a laugh. “I shouldn’t laugh because your family was just as bad in their own way but after watching Gaylen’s family…”

His reaction made me shake my head and try not to smile. “Oh yeah.”

People sometimes said it could always get worse and I was starting to think there was more truth than I’d realized in that statement.

I’d hoped that was the end of the crazy until Daddy sighed again and took another deep breath. Good grief, how could it get worse?

“You also might not want to ask about how his dating experience in college went.” Daddy went back to nodding as I made another face, unable to stop myself. “Yeah, it’s that bad. I only asked once after we’d started actually dating and were slightly drunk. It was bad. His first two serious relationships ended up being with nearly serial killer crazy people.”

Because that was all he’d known growing up?

I didn’t have to ask, thankfully.

“They fucked him up royally too because he’d jumped in headfirst with both of them, looking for love.” Daddy looked sad as he seemed to be reliving the conversation. “That’s why Gaylen is so… let’s call it cautious about jumping into certain aspects of a relationship.”

Fuck.

Okay, we really should’ve talked more and flirted less.

I hated it when Master was this right.

“Should I pretend not to know all of this?” My question had Daddy cocking his head, going back to his slightly lost expression as he thought about the answer.

“Not his college stuff. He’s probably expecting me to tell you.” Daddy chuckled, shrugging. “Pulling an Ender, really.”

That made me grin because itwassomething Ender would do.

“But the rest…” He shrugged. “I don’t think so but I always let him bring up his family.”

That seemed like the best option to me too. Maybe not the right one, but there wasn’t a clear winner.

“I generally don’t ask about them.” That had him looking guilty again. “It might not be the right way to handle it but there isalwayssomething going wrong with them and it’s never a happy topic.”

Yeah, I could see how tough that would be for him.

“I think that’s the safest bet.” And I was also starting to think that this conversation was part of why Master had wanted us to have a real conversation and not just talk about sex. “Oh, random thought.”

And hopefully a happier one as long as Daddy didn’t mind me changing the subject.

“If he asks, my birthday is in March and true crime shows really are my favorite and surprise presents are fine but surprisepartiesare not.” It was never fun to have everyone jump out from behind the furniture and yell like they were excited about getting murdered.

Daddy laughed as the last of his emotion from talking about Gaylen’s family faded. “Yes, we need to be able to tell him what we discussed because I have a feeling there will be a quiz at the end of the date.”

Master Gaylen was stubborn enough to meet us at the door with a notebook and a checklist, so a quiz was not out of the question.

“You know, there are probably some good lists online about what to ask someone on a first date. Maybe we should use that as a guide?” The Ender in the back of my head just rolled his eyes but Daddy nodded and looked delighted as he dug out his phone.

“Oh, that’s a very good idea. Then when we get those out of the way efficiently, I can tell you about what your Master was telling me the other night while he was… let’s say he was missing his naughty girl.”

Oh, Daddy knew how to make dates so much fun… and I loved the way his mind worked when he sat up straight and took our plan seriously. “Alright, let’s get through these quickly. What is your sign?”

Chapter 19

Gaylen

“I just thought I’d see how everything was going. Tabitha’s been very happy.” Ender’s words technically made sense but it took me a moment to realize what he might’ve been trying to talk around. While I was becoming more fluent in Tabitha, Ender was still a mystery sometimes.
