Dontell shook his head and gestured to me. “Bounty hunter.”

Leon looked at me. “Who is it and how much?”

They thought I was after one of their people.

“He’s a visitor here tonight. Not a racer or crew member,” I stated.

“You here to start shit?” he clipped, setting the book on the table.

I shook my head once.

He cursed under his breath and clicked a few keys on the keyboard in front of him. Then, the wall behind lifted to reveal about twenty screens, giving us a full view on everything happening in and outside of Oasis. Mason Langston was on the third screen.

“Where?” Dontell asked, leaning against the wall, looking bored.

“Third screen.”

“Mason Langston?” That was Leon. He walked around the desk to lean against it. “What do you want with a bull rider?” he asked, tilting his head.

“His brother wants him home. Family business,” I said firmly, not giving them anymore.

The men shared a look. “Fair enough. Lead the way.”

Twohourslater,Ientered my hotel room.

Two minutes after that, the second background check on Valerie Cross was complete.

Thirty seconds after that, I was kicking myself for being right.

Tomorrow, I would make a phone call.

As for tonight, I needed to ice my hand.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Denver

“Iwantedtoapologizefor missing dinner last night.”

Nancy looked up from the E-reader in her hand. She was sitting on the porch swing with a blanket wrapped around her legs, despite the summer heat. Today, a yellow silk scarf was wrapped around her head, making her pale green eyes seem brighter than yesterday.

She smiled at me. “No, I should be the one apologizing to you. I feel like what I said to you might have had something to do with that.”

My jaw tightened.

Last night, Valerie and I shared something special.

Love.

Something I never thought I would have, something that scared the shit out of me. After making love to her, we packed up and left the forest. When we came out, the four-wheeler was waiting for us in Ranger’s place. By the time we arrived back at the house, everyone was asleep. The kitchen was cleaned, and Jackie was snoring on the couch.

This morning, Valerie went into town with the twins to get some groceries. Caleb wanted to go, but until this shit with Moonie was handled, I couldn’t let him leave the ranch. He was down in the barn with Mags and Jigs. I would be heading down there in a moment to have a talk with him about his mother.

My boy deserved better.

My thoughts drifted to the woman who woke up beside me this morning. The woman who kissed me like I was the air she needed to breathe after I repeated those three little words. The woman who looked at my boy like he was a treasure. The woman with the breathtaking smile and enchanting eyes.

“Denver?”
