And all I could think at that moment was how stupid I’d been to succumb. But I didn’t want to take it back.

I stood and walked to the bathroom, grabbing a washcloth from the cabinet. I brought it to the sink, where I let the terrycloth fabric soak up the warm water. Taking a deep breath, I walked back to the bed, finding Briar looking at me with those irresistible come-fuck-me eyes.

Don’t worry, Little Bunny,I thought.I can make you come as often as the wind blows if you want me to.

But I really shouldn’t. I shouldn’t have done this.

I kneeled on the bed and wiped the small trickles of blood and my orgasm from her center and her upper thighs. I placed the washcloth on the floor, giving my full attention to the beautiful woman lying naked in my bed.

She was supposed to be in my care, and instead, I took her virginity. What the fuck was I thinking? The trouble was, I hadn’t been thinking. I’d only acted. With my cock.

As if she was reading my thoughts, Briar reached out to touch my face, cupping my cheeks between her hands.

“I meant what I said before,” she breathed softly. “This doesn’t have to mean anything, Ash. We don’t have to make this a big deal.”

It was easy for her to say; she had no idea what I’d put at risk by being with her like this.

I shifted my body away but kept my hand on her head, avoiding her eyes. How had she ended up here, as collateral for a loan that her piece-of-shit father couldn’t pay back?

“Where is your mother?” I asked bluntly.

I sensed the slight stiffness in her demeanor at my question, but she didn’t withdraw from me, a small sigh falling from her lips.

“Dead,” she said quietly.

I cringed at my insensitivity. I hadn’t realized that. If I had, I wouldn’t have sprung it on her with so little tact.

“Don’t feel bad,” she added quickly. “It was a long time ago.”

I didn’t believe that she was over it in the least. The pain in her voice was thick, fresh.

“How long ago?”

She shrugged and turned away. “Long enough,” she murmured. “It… it was expected.”

Surprised, I propped myself up and peered at her. “She was sick?”

Briar shook her head and then nodded. “No. Yes. Well, not with a physical ailment… not a diagnosed one, anyway.”

My eyebrows shot up questioningly, and Briar moved uncomfortably. I opened my mouth to tell her not to worry about explaining, that she didn’t need to tell me anything she didn’t want to say, but she continued in a rush of breath.

“My mother was a rabbit, too,” she said, glancing at me through her peripheral vision. “Which meant that she was incredibly fertile.”

My curiosity was uncharacteristically piqued.

“You have siblings?” I asked, shocked.

Briar shook her head again. “No…” she whispered, tears misting her wide, blue eyes. “None of them survived.”

The news struck me harder than it should have. I didn’t know Briar’s family well enough to be affected by the loss of her faceless siblings, and yet…

“How many?” I asked, wishing I hadn’t, but I had to know now.

“I’m not sure,” Briar answered quickly. “I may have known at one time, but the reality was so horrible, and after my mother…”

I swallowed thickly.

“She couldn’t bear the losses anymore,” Briar mumbled, sitting up to curl her knees against her chest. “And I wasn’t enough for her to stay.”
