“Did you just call me from a bad connection?” I asked.

“No, my love. Only just now for the first time, but I do have some rather interesting news that you may find… daunting.”

“Can it wait? Today has been hectic.”

“Has it? Well, I suppose it could. It’s been on ice for two centuries already, so I suppose another day won’t much matter.”

I hated the way he babbled in riddles. Damn wizards.

“Fine,” I said dully. “I’m intrigued. What is it?”

“Are you sitting?”

“Should I be?” I grumbled, remaining in place by the bar.

“I would rather recommend it, my dear.”

I rolled my eyes and continued pouring my celebratory scotch. “Okay. I’m sitting,” I lied. “What’s the news?”

“Do you recall that I told you I tend to hear tidbits of information about this and that, here and there?”

“Sure.”

“Well, I happened to have come across something tonight that might interest you.”

“I wish you’d get on with it, Avalon. I don’t pay you by the word you speak.”

“Consider this a freebie anyway, dear one. This is pertaining to your boy, Elijah Webb, was it?”

Suddenly, I wished I had sat down.

“Are you fucking with me, Avalon?”

“In which way, Ash?”

My eyes narrowed, and now I took his advice, finding the chair behind my desk to collapse and listen.

“What about Elijah, Avalon?”

“Well… and again, my friend, this is very delicate, and forgive any old wounds this may agitate—”

“Holy hell, Avalon. Get on with it!”

“It appears that Elijah is still alive.”
