Maisie grimaced, running a hand through her blonde mane nervously. “Because I didn’t come to you when I found out that this one was alive.”

She stuck a thumb out at me. Abby blinked and shook her head, shock coloring her face.

“What? No, of course not. I’m not petty and vindictive, Maisie. Although, that does rouse a good question. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Maisie grimaced. “Frankly, I wasn’t sure that you hadn’t gone to the dark side with Orson,” she admitted without any coaxing.

Abby scowled, but I smoothly stepped in.

“You made the right call coming for me,” I told her quickly. “And everything worked out in the end.”

Maisie shifted her weight uncomfortably.

“What is it, Maisie?” I asked impatiently. “If you have something to say, spit it out.”

“I don’t care about running anything,” she sighed. “I only want to find Anamarie.”

Again, Abby and I exchanged a quick glance.

“I mean, I’ll do whatever you need me to do,” she rushed on. “But that’s not my main concern. I just wanted to make that clear.”

My jaw twitched, but Abby answered, placing a hand on my shoulder before I could speak.

“We want you to find her, too—and all the other women,” she reassured the fae. “Serafina is as good a place as any to start, right, Elijah?”

I nodded, and Maisie shrugged, unconvinced, but she didn’t push the issue and excused herself.

When we were alone, Abby turned to me, eyebrows raised.

“You can’t blame her,” she told me quietly. “Business hasn’t ever been her priority. And it’s a good thing; because if it were, you wouldn’t be here.”

Begrudgingly, I nodded.

“But you do need to explain why you’re sending her into the middle of nowhere. Do you think she’ll find Anamarie there?”

Honestly, I hadn’t thought about it, but I knew that I trusted Maisie more than anyone else in the crew, and everything I’d said to her was a fact.

“No,” I answered. “But that’s where I clawed my way out of the dirt. There has to be something magical about that place if I survived that, doesn’t it?”

Abby smiled enigmatically, slipping her arms around my waist to tip her head back and look at me.

“I like to think that you survived because you and I still have work to do together… for the rest of eternity.”

I returned her smile with a sweet kiss, elation flooding through me.

I rather liked the sound of that.
