“Nothing’s wrong,” I reassured her. “In fact, everything is just as it’s supposed to be.”

Staring at me blankly, she pulled back slightly to take in my face entirely, mild concern coloring her expression.

“Then why are you looking at me like that?” she demanded, sitting up. “You’re scaring me.”

“You shouldn’t be scared,” I told her quickly, sitting up and guiding her upright, too. “On the contrary. You should feel safer than you’ve ever felt in your life.”

“Okay… why?”

A slow smile spread across my face, and I dropped a soft kiss on her lips.

“Because I just learned that you’re immortal, Abby. Just like me. Orson can’t hurt you.”

Chapter41

Abby

Flabbergasted, I could only gawk at him, blinking.

“What?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. You’ve been immortal since our mate bond solidified. It’s apparently common knowledge to any Original who hasn’t been living under a rock.”

My jaw remained slack as I studied his face. I didn’t think he was lying to me, but I also couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea that I was just like him, destined to live for eternity.

“Did you hear what I said, Princess?” he pressed when I didn’t respond. “We’re never going to be apart. We’re bound together forever.”

A terrible pang of bittersweetness struck my heart as I stared at him, unable to feel complete joy over the announcement. We had lost two hundred years because he had rejected me, worried that I would outlive him. And it had all been for nothing.

Instantly, Elijah appeared to understand my distress, and he pulled me back against him.

“We can’t change the past,” he murmured, stroking my hair. “What happened, happened.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat, trying not to succumb to the bitterness, but it was difficult.

“What matters is that we’re never going to have to address that problem. And you have nothing to fear with Orson. He could never hurt you—no matter what,” he continued.

A smidgen of doubt shifted through me, but it was gone as Elijah rained kisses over me.

“We’re stronger than we believed. We don’t need the numbers, Abby. We can’t fail as long as we’re tenacious.”

I allowed myself to enjoy the revelation, Elijah’s enthusiasm contagious, despite the strange nagging that sat at the back of my mind.

I drew back, still in his arms.

“What does that mean, then?” I asked slowly. “What is our next move?”

He caressed my cheek.

“We both rest up tonight—for real. Tomorrow, the rest of Ash’s men will be here, and we’re going to find Orson and take him out—for good. We don’t come back until he’s gone.”

I shivered, but Elijah held fast to me.

“He can’t hurt you,” he said again. “I swear it.”

I shook my head.

“I believe you,” I murmured, wishing I could alleviate the intensifying buzzing in the back of my ears.
