“You heard the woman,” he called out, waving his hands. “Let’s move!”

Chapter42

Elijah

Understandably, Orson’s defectors were nervous about attacking head-on. Our act of spreading disquiet over the city had drawn them to us, Silver, Draven, and Jake handling their recruitment.

They had been told I was an Original, and that I had founded the Verity Gang, but that was where the extent of their knowledge of me expired. None of them had been around when I had ruled, although several had parents and grandparents who remembered my reign of the city.

Regardless, they were reluctant to join in the frontal attack, and I agreed.

“It’s better if they stay outside, anyway,” I conceded. “You know who to look for, and act as distractions should you see anyone trying to intercede.”

In groups, we headed out of the hotel, me, with Ash’s men in one vehicle, the Verity Gang members in their separate transport.

“Be careful,” Abby begged me when I stopped to tell her we were going. “Invincible or not.”

I embraced her, kissing the top of her head.

“You be careful, too. Stay out of the way, and signal for one of Ash’s men if I’m not nearby. I’m not sure how trustworthy the Verities on our side are yet.”

Pario City whizzed by me through the back tinted window of the SUV, which Arlen had driven up from MacShire. The moose shifter rode in the driver’s seat, studying me through the rearview mirror, but like the others, he didn’t ask questions. I had to wonder where Ash found these guys.

“Park away from the warehouse. I don’t want him to see us coming,” I instructed, sensing that they were waiting for directions. “We go inside and take him out. No discussion, no chatter. That’s it.”

Arlen nodded along with the others, not a word spoken among them. I was going to miss this lot. I’d have to ask Ash for training tips when all was said and done. They were exactly what I wanted for my own crew.

“He doesn’t get a chance to get away again,” I added, to be clear. “And I don’t want him influencing Abby in any way.”

“Would you like one of us to stay with her when she arrives?” Draven suggested. I eyed him, considering it.

“Hopefully Orson will be dead by that point,” I said curtly.

Arlen pulled the car toward the side of the road, his digital map indicating the address was up ahead. I recognized the neighborhood already, Abby’s house just down the way, but that was not where we were heading.

“You’re sure he’s still here?” I asked Draven pointedly as we climbed out of the car.

“We have eyes on him, and the intel we’ve received is that he’s still in the warehouse,” Draven told me confidently, and I believed him.

He hadn’t steered me wrong yet.

I nodded. “Let’s go finish him.”

We scattered in four directions, two of us taking on each side of the warehouse. To my right, I saw a gate surrounding a massive house, and I paused, dumbfounded.

He built a house exactly like mine!

The specs were proportionate to my estate that had been torn down, but the building was almost identical in every way. It infuriated me more. The bastard had truly stolen my life.

Was he trying to steal Abby, too?

I balked as I realized it hadn’t occurred to me before.

“What’s wrong?” Draven hissed worriedly, his guard up as he peered after me. “Do you see something?”

I shook my head, shoving aside my misgivings. Whatever Orson had done, he would pay for now. I’d see to that.

Ensuring that everyone was in position, I held up a hand. In unison, we shifted, kicking our clothing aside to reclaim after our battle was complete.
