He lifted the pistol and pressed it between my eyes. It was the first time someone held me at gunpoint. Was this how I’ll die?

A new flash of lightning created a weird glow in my small hallway, allowing me to look into his eyes. They had long, beautiful lashes, but the iris was red. That’s impossible. Sharp cheekbones and a frown threw me off.

“No ambulance, no hospital. Help me”

He pushed himself against me, his massive body towering over me. He was tall and muscular, like a wall of power, but he was wounded and could barely hold on. My body was pressing against the wall. My teeth started to clatter.

“Please,” I whispered. “I don’t know how.”

He looked down at me. My hands were still on his rock-hard abs with hot blood gushing all over them. I couldn’t see much. Only the occasional lightning gave me a glimpse of the armed stranger who stepped into my life and was about to lose his.

“Take the bullets out.” His voice was thick and gravely, but at the same time felt like honey dripping from his beautiful mouth.

A new lightning bolt allowed me to see his white, straight teeth. He pressed them together, trying to breathe through what looked like intense pain.

“You are going into shock because of blood loss.”

“I won’t. Fix me.”

I must be losing my mind. I’m studying my attacker’s lips instead of focusing on getting out of this. The stubble gave him a certain look that made my knees weak.

I tried to reason with him. “Let’s drive to the hospital.”

“No! Take them out. Silver. Or I’ll kill you!”

Each of his words sounded labored. His breath came in short exhales that almost burned my skin. Tall guy leaned against me, his large arm resting on my shoulder. It felt as if I was about to get buried under a ton of bricks. Under the scent of blood, his manly scent drove me crazy, tickling a part of my brain I had forgotten about.

This was the closest I’ve been to a man since Nick.

“I’ll try. But put the pistol away. I’ll take you inside.”

“No tricks. I can end you in one wink.” He pushed the words out through a clenched jaw.

“That’s no way to motivate me, asshole.”

He chuckled, but the sound turned into a painful cough. “You’re a feisty one. I like it.”

“Worse, I’m a nurse. Lean on me.”

He did, holding the pistol in one hand. I walked with him to the kitchen table. He was weak. I could have taken the weapon from him. Somehow, I knew he would not hurt me, which was stupid on my part.

“Lay down.” My voice sounded calm and commanding, but I didn’t feel it. I was shaking, burning, and had no idea what I was doing.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“A polite burglar,” I added just before biting my tongue. My big mouth will one day get me killed.

“I’m not a burglar. Now please, take those damn bullets out!”

“Give me a second. I can’t see what I am doing.”

What was I doing? I turned my back to him and grabbed the edge of the counter. This is madness. I’m a nurse, but I have never operated on anyone. Can I get to jail for it? Will the police understand that he had a gun and I was afraid for my life? I bit the inside of my cheek so hard it bled.

“Faster. If the silver hits my heart, I’ll die. Please.” Pain and despair dripped from his voice.

I turned back toward him. He had taken off his jacket and lay on the kitchen table. Well, his upper body, at least. His long legs dangled over the edge. He threw me a desperate look. He still held on to his gun.

“I can’t think when you point that gun at me. Please.”
