“Wow, you carry the years well.”

“The key is always to have a hobby.”

“And what’s that in your case?”

“Believe it or not, I love to collect books. Some are older than me. Makes me feel good. Memory is not always reliable. There are entire decades I wish I could forget in one heartbeat or, to be honest, I have forgotten.”

“Did you know Granny, too?”

“Ruby was incredible. And yes, I did. She was such an extraordinary woman. I’m so sorry about everything.”

I must have pressed my hand on my chest.

“There’s something.”

“Isn’t it always?”

Two large wolves crashed through the trees. Soren was white and beautiful. He fought another one, a silver-grey wolf. The moment the silver wolf looked at me, he flashed his teeth. I jumped up. Torin, who walked up to me with a plate filled with food, dropped the plate and pushed me behind him.

“Who’s that? Why don’t you help Soren?”

“It’s okay. Stay behind me. Soren is alpha. He needs to step up us sometimes but he isn’t in danger.”

The silver wolf tried to attack Soren, but he was larger and pushed into him, his long teeth wrapping around the neck of the other. The silver wolf shifted back and turned into a drop-dead gorgeous man. I had a hard time looking anywhere else rather than at his naked form.

“I yield, okay. You win.”

Soren growled and released the man, who slurred something. Still in wolf form, Soren shook his fur. The former silver wolf had the bluest eyes I have ever seen. He walked towards me butt naked. As a nurse, I’ve seen many naked people : Younger, older, good-looking, and less attractive. But damn, this man was a girl’s wet dream.

And he was drunk as a skunk.

He stopped in front of Torin.

“You, let me see the royal mate,” he slurred, pushing his fingers against the big guy’s chest.

“Alistair, you’re drunk. Go sleep it off.”

“You’re not my alpha. You don’t tell me what to do.”

Torin released a growl.

I pushed Torin away to confront the stranger. Alistair looked at me.

“Run. Leave while you can. Your mate will be either your death or you’ll spend the rest of your life broken-hearted. We’re not good.” He pointed toward Soren. “He’s not good for you.”

Soren stood next to him. “Alistair, go.”

The words were not spoken in anger, but the tone of command left no space for doubt or negotiation.

“Run away, royal mate. Run. I’m just fucking saying.”

Soren barked, and Alistair raised his hands. “Fuck. I’m going. I’m going.”

It took all my power not to turn my head after him. I should have been upset with him and how he behaved, but I couldn’t. I was curious. I wanted to know his story.

Soren put on his jeans. His sexy chest was fully exposed. “I’m sorry, love. Do you want to leave?”

“Are you kidding me? I get BBQ and a show.”
